Bob Beckel Bio, Life and Career:
Robert Gilliland Beckel was an American political analyst and commentator, as well as a political operative. He was born on November 15, 1948, and passed away on February 20, 2022. He worked for Fox News as both an analyst and a commentator. Prior to being fired from his positions as a pundit on Fox News and an initial co-host on The Five in 2015, he had been missing for several months while recovering from back surgery. He had also worked for Fox News. Following his departure from Fox News, Beckel began working as a pundit for CNN. On January 16, 2017, however, he returned to Fox News as a co-host for The Five.
Fox News said on May 19, 2017, that Beckel had been terminated once more following allegations that he had made a racial comment to a member of the Fox News staff. Beckel was raised in Lyme, Connecticut, after having been born in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Manhattan. He is the son of Ellen Gilliland Beckel and Cambridge Graham Beckel Jr., who is the author of Workshops for the World: The United Nations Family of Agencies. He was named after his grandfather, Cambridge Graham Beckel.
Both of Beckel’s parents struggled with alcoholism throughout their lives. Actor Graham Beckel is his younger brother, and he is the older brother. Beckel attended Wagner College on Staten Island and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree. During his time at the university, he was a member of the Theta Chi fraternity and was also a football player and was employed by the presidential campaign of Robert F. Kennedy in the year 1968. Beckel went on to teach politics to graduate students at George Washington University after completing his undergraduate degree. He had previously worked as a Peace Corps volunteer in the Philippines between the years 1971 and 1972.
Beckel became the youngest deputy assistant secretary of state in the Carter administration when he joined the United States Department of State in 1977. His position was as deputy assistant secretary of state for legislative affairs. In that capacity, he was instrumental in assisting in the ratification of the Panama Canal Treaty by the United States Congress. The year after that, he was given the position of special assistant to the president for legislative affairs. In this capacity, he worked on the ratification of the Salt II and Mideast accords.
Beckel served as campaign manager for Walter Mondale’s 1984 presidential campaign. Mondale’s opponent that year was Ronald Reagan. During that campaign, he became well-known as the individual who was responsible for effectively wrapping Wendy’s slogan “Where’s the beef?” around Gary Hart, Mondale’s opponent for the Democratic candidate. Hart was running against Mondale for the Democratic nomination. At the tail end of 1984, he established the consulting firm Bob Beckel & Associates, also known as BBA, a lobbying firm that was eventually superseded by Beckel–Cowan the following year.
In the presidential election of 2000, Beckel urged voters in Florida to overturn George W. Bush’s narrow victory against Al Gore. This was rejected by Gore, and several of Beckel’s business partners in his firm left as a result of Beckel’s move, which forced Beckel to dissolve his company. Beckel managed the campaign of Alan Blinken, the Democratic nominee for the United States Senate in Idaho in 2002 until he resigned after it became public that he was a witness and victim in an extortion attempt by a prostitute. Beckel managed the campaign until it became public that he was a witness and victim in an extortion attempt by a prostitute.
In the pilot episode of the eighth season of the television series 24, which aired in 2010, he made a cameo appearance as himself and participated in a satirical argument with fellow Fox News Analyst Monica Crowley. Beckel began his tenure as a co-host of The Five on Fox News in 2011 and continued in that capacity until June 2015, when the network made the announcement that Beckel was no longer associated with the program. A spokesperson for Fox stated that the network “could not keep The Five hostage to one man’s personal difficulties.”
Beckel, whose last appearance on the show was in February 2015, had been absent while recovering from back surgery. He had also drawn controversy in the last episode prior to his dismissal when he described himself as an “Islamophobe” in response to the Charlie Hebdo shooting. Beckel’s absence had been due to the fact that he had been absent while recovering from back surgery. Beckel has reportedly “entered rehab facilities for treatment of an addiction to prescription pain medication,” according to a statement made by the network.
In October 2011, while attending a luncheon hosted by Fox News, Beckel nearly choked to death on a piece of shrimp. Fortunately, Fox News CEO Roger Ailes and The Five co-host Eric Bolling were there to save him. During his stint on “The Five,” Beckel was known for making statements that frequently drew negative attention. In 2011, Beckel spoke on a panel hosted by Fox News and advocated for “illegally shooting” Julian Assange, the editor-in-chief of WikiLeaks. Beckel posed the question, “When’s the last time you heard about rape on a college campus?” in February of 2013. Following the feedback he received for his remarks, he issued an apology.
Beckel referred to those who were born in China as “chinamen” in July 2014. Additionally, during the same month, he referred to Andi Dorfman, who stars in The Bachelorette, as a “slut.” Beckel’s return to The Five as a co-host took effect on January 16, 2017. However, in May of that same year, he was sacked once more over allegations that he had made racially offensive remarks to a Black employee who worked for the company. Following his termination from Fox, Beckel voiced his disapproval of the network’s portrayal of Donald Trump, singling out Tucker Carlson in particular.
