Courtney Barnett Bio, Life and Career:

Courtney Melba Barnett is a well-known Australian singer, songwriter, and musician. She was born on November 3, 1987 in Australia. She is well-known for her deadpan singing style and humorous, rambling lyrics, and in 2012, she released her debut extended play (EP) titled I’ve Got a Friend Named Emily Ferris, which is what brought her to the public’s attention. The publication of her extended play (EP), titled The Double EP: A Sea of Split Peas, in the year 2013 garnered her international attention. Courtney Melba Barnett was the artist.  She was given her middle name after opera diva Nellie Melba.

She spent her childhood in the Northern Beaches region of Sydney. Her mother had a career in the ballet.  When she was 16 years old, her family relocated to Hobart from another city. Both St. Michael’s Collegiate School and the Tasmanian School of Art were on her educational path.  After spending her childhood listening to American bands, she eventually found the music of Australian singer-songwriters Darren Hanlon and Dan Kelly, and they encouraged her to begin composing songs of her own.  As she was trying to make it as a musician, she supported herself by working as a pizza delivery driver.

Barnett was a member of the Melbourne grunge band Rapid Transit from 2010 till 2011 and played the second guitar. They only issued one record on cassette, which is now considered an extremely valuable item for collectors. She participated in the recording of several early versions of her songs with a band that was originally titled Courtney Barnett and the Olivettes but was eventually trimmed to simply the Olivettes.  They did so by putting out a live EP demo CD, of which there were 100 copies created and each one was manually numbered.

At this time, Barnett was a featured artist on a song by Giles Field, a singer-songwriter from Melbourne, titled “I Can’t Hear You, We’re Breaking Up,” which was released toward the end of 2011. In addition, her name appears on the song’s credits as a co-writer. Barnett was a member of the Australian psych-country band Immigrant Union from 2011 to 2013. Immigrant Union was a musical endeavor that was created by Brent DeBoer (of The Dandy Warhols) and Bob Harrow. Barnett’s tenure with the band lasted from 2011 until 2013.

In addition to contributing vocals to the band’s music, Barnett was primarily responsible for playing slide guitar on their second studio album, titled Anyhow. I’ve Got a Friend Called Emily Ferris was Barnett’s debut extended play (EP), and DeBoer was the drummer for it.  Milk! Records, which is owned and operated by Barnett, released it in the year 2012.Barnett contributed his lead guitar playing to the recording of Jen Cloher’s third studio album, titled In Blood Memory, in 2013. This album was also issued through Milk! Records. After the publication of her first extended play (EP), Barnett inked a deal with Marathon Artists (via its imprint House Anxiety).

Barnett’s debut EP and her second EP, How to Carve a Carrot Into a Rose, were both released by Marathon Artists in August 2013 under the title The Double EP: A Sea of Split Peas. This release was a combined bundle of the two EPs.  Barnett received critical praise on a global scale as a result of the release of the Double EP. The lead song, “Avant Gardener,” was named Track of the Day by Q Magazine and Best New Track by Pitchfork in 2013.  The music publication Stereogum hailed it as the best record of the week.  A nomination was submitted for “History Eraser” to be considered for APRA Song of the Year.

In October 2013, Milk! Records distributed a limited number of copies of the How to Carve a Carrot into a Rose EP as a stand-alone recording. In 2014, Mom + Pop Music collaborated with Marathon Artists and House Anxiety with the purpose of releasing The Double EP in the United States. Barnett is a left-handed guitarist who plays almost exclusively on left-handed guitars that are tuned and with string orders that are normal for left-handed musicians (low strings at the top, high strings at the bottom).  She plays right-handed guitars in an inverted position from time to time, but this is not her preferred playing style.

She started off learning to play on acoustic guitars, and because she didn’t like the sound of a pick, she came up with her own technique for playing fingerstyle guitar. She eventually translated this playing style to the electric guitar. She is able to use a pick and believes that she could probably play better with one, but she prefers to play using her fingers, strumming with both her thumb and index finger on rhythm parts, and using her index finger where she would otherwise use a pick for lead parts.

She is able to use a pick and claims that she could probably play better with one. She is most comfortable playing in standard tuning, however she has experimented with open G tuning when playing slide guitar. During the years 2012 and 2018, Barnett was in a relationship with fellow artist Jen Cloher, and the two of them wrote the song “Numbers” together. The song is about their relationship and was composed by both of them. Their connection is also detailed in the song “Pickles from the Jar” by Barnett, and Cloher is mentioned in the first line of “Dead Fox” by Barnett. A “major consistent influence” on Barnett’s music, Cloher was described as such by the artist.  Moreover, she was a member of the band of Cloher from 2012 till 2018.
