Tame Impala Bio, Life, and Career:

Kevin Parker, an Australian musician who plays multiple instruments, is the creative force behind the psychedelic music of Tame Impala.  In the recording studio, Parker is responsible for not only writing, recording, and performing all of the music for the project, but also producing it. Tame Impala is a touring band comprised of members Parker (vocals, guitar, synthesizer), Dominic Simper (guitar, synthesizer), Jay Watson (synthesizer, vocals, guitar), Cam Avery (bass guitar, vocals, synthesizer), and Julien Barbagallo.

Parker handles vocals, guitar, and synthesizer duties, while Dominic Simper handles guitar and synthesizer duties (drums, vocals). The band has a strong connection to another Australian psychedelic rock band called Pond, with whom they share members and collaborations. Nick Allbrook, a former live member of Tame Impala, is one of the band’s members. Tame Impala is now contracted to Interscope Records in the United States and Fiction Records in the United Kingdom. Before, the band was under contract with Modular Recordings.

In 2007, Parker had the initial idea for the project while he was in Perth. Following a string of singles and extended plays, Tame Impala issued their first full-length studio album, titled Innerspeaker, in 2010. The album was certified gold in Australia and garnered positive reviews from music reviewers. The follow-up album that Parker released in 2012 called Lonerism received a lot of praise and was certified platinum in Australia. It was also nominated for a Grammy Award in the category of Best Alternative Music Album.

Currents, the third studio album by Tame Impala, was released in July 2015, and it went on to win both the ARIA Award for Best Rock Album and the ARIA Award for Album of the Year, just like its predecessor did. The song “Let It Happen,” which was the debut single released by Currents, earned Parker the APRA Award for Song of the Year in 2016.  The Slow Rush, the band’s fourth studio album, was made available for purchase on February 14, 2020. Tame Impala was victorious at the ARIA Music Awards in 2020, taking home five prizes.

The act can trace its beginnings back to the music scene in Perth, Western Australia. The Dee Dee Dums were a rock duet that consisted of Parker (on guitar) and Luke Epstein. Parker played in a number of bands, one of which was the Dee Dee Dums (drums). Kevin Parker began Tame Impala in 2007 as a home-recording project at this time period. At the same time, he uploaded a number of tunes to his Myspace page. This piqued the interest of a number of labels, and in the end, he settled on a worldwide deal with the indie record company Modular Recordings and signed it in July of 2008.

Parker recruited Dominic Simper (bass) and Jay Watson (drums) to assist him in bringing these recordings to life on a live stage, and the three of them started performing at various local gigs. With the contract, the band immediately went ahead and released an EP under their own name in September 2008. It reached number 1 on the Australian Independent Record Labels (AIR) Chart and number 10 on the ARIA Physical Singles Chart, with three songs, “Desire Be, Desire Go,” “Half Full Glass of Wine,” and “Skeleton Tiger,” receiving national radio airplay on the Triple J radio station.

“Half Full Glass of Wine” and “Skeleton Tiger” were also featured on the ARIA Physical Singles Chart. The band went on a number of tours in 2008, including opening gigs for acts such as You Am I, The Black Keys, Yeasayer, and MGMT. They also performed at festivals such as Southbound Festival, Meredith Music Festival, and Falls Festival, in addition to headlining national tours in support of their EP. In 2009, the band went on multiple tours, including a sold-out six-date national headline tour called “Skeleton Tiger,” a five-date UK tour (including Nevereverland UK), and performances at V Festival, among other events.

Dave Fridmann was the one responsible for the mixing of Lonerism, the second studio album by Tame Impala, which was released in 2012.  According to Parker, the album Lonerism “represents a shift from his prior work by embracing an enlarged sonic palette, more emotionally charged songwriting, and a more pronounced narrative perspective.” It was made in a manner that was analogous to that of Innerspeaker, in which Parker penned and recorded the majority of the album by himself at his residence in Perth, Western Australia.  The recording was also partially done in Parker’s home studio in France, which is located in Europe.

During his time in France, Parker was involved in the production of the dream pop album “Melody’s Echo Chamber,” as well as playing on the record. Melody’s Echo Chamber is the brainchild of French singer Melody Prochet. As a direct consequence of this, one of the songs on the album Lonerism is referred to as “Endors Toi,” which, when translated from French to English, basically means “fall asleep.”

The photograph used for the album cover was taken by Parker at the Jardin du Luxembourg in Paris, France. Leif Podhajsky, a graphic designer who was responsible for creating the album art for Innerspeaker, added extra editing to the photograph. The viewer is separated from the people who are in the Gardens by a metal fence, which connects into the sentiments of loneliness and isolation that run throughout the image.
