David Alan Grier Bio, Life and Career:

David Alan Grier was born in Detroit, Michigan, to Aretas Ruth (Dudley), a schoolteacher, and William Henry Grier, a psychiatrist and writer. He got an MFA from the Yale School of Drama, where he also received training in Shakespeare, during his time at Yale University. Grier began his professional career on Broadway as Jackie Robinson in “The First”, for which he garnered a Tony nomination for Best Featured Actor in a Musical and won the Theatre World Award (1981).

After that, he became a member of the Broadway cast of the musical “Dreamgirls,” and then he went on to perform opposite Denzel Washington in the play “A Soldier’s Play.” Both of these actors later repeated their roles in the film adaptation of the play, which was titled “A Soldier’s Story” (1984). He played in Robert Altman’s Streamers (1983) as “Roger”, a part for which he received the Golden Lion for Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival (1983).

His work in television is best known for his role as a principal cast member on the Emmy Award–winning series In Living Color (1990). During that time, he contributed to the development of some of the show’s most iconic characters, including “DAG” (2000-2001) and “Life with Bonnie” (2002-2004), for which he was nominated for Image and Golden Satellite Awards.

David also conceived, scripted and executive-produced a show for Comedy Central called Chocolate News (2008). (2008). Grier was nominated for his first GRAMMY in 2013, when the cast recording of The Gershwin’s “Porgy & Bess” was nominated for the GRAMMY Award for Best Musical Theater Album.
