Gerard Butler Bio, Life, and Career:
Gerard James Butler is a Scottish actor and film producer. He was born on November 13, 1969, in Scotland. After completing his legal education, he began a career in acting in the middle of the 1990s, appearing in supporting roles in films such as Mrs. Brown (1997), the James Bond movie Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), and Tale of the Mummy (1998).
In the dark fantasy horror film Dracula 2000, which he acted in alongside Christopher Plummer and Jonny Lee Miller, he played the role of Count Dracula. After playing Attila the Hun in the miniseries Attila (2001), he went on to appear in the films Reign of Fire (2002) and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life (2003), both of which starred Christian Bale and Angelina Jolie, respectively, before landing the role of André Marek in the adaptation of Michael Crichton’s science fiction adventure Timeline (2003).
After that, he was given the role of Erik, The Phantom, in Joel Schumacher’s film adaption of the musical The Phantom of the Opera, which was released in 2004 and starred Emmy Rossum; for his performance, he was nominated for a Satellite Award in the category of Best Actor.
Because of his performance as King Leonidas in the epic battle film 300, directed by Zack Snyder, Gerard Butler received widespread acclaim. Because of his performance in that role, he was nominated for an Empire Award and a Saturn Award, both in the category of Best Actor and he also won the MTV Movie Award for Best Fight. In the critically acclaimed and economically successful How to Train Your Dragon franchise, he provided the voice of Stoick the Vast (2010–2019).
In addition, he played the role of Secret Service agent Mike Banning in the action thriller series Olympus Has Fallen, London Has Fallen, Angel Has Fallen, and the impending Night Has Fallen. All of these series took place in the 2010s. He is best known for his roles as the military commander Tullus Aufidius in the 2011 film adaption of Shakespeare’s tragedy of the same name, Coriolanus, and Sam Childers in the 2011 action biography Machine Gun Preacher. Both of these films were released in 2011.
He was the youngest of three children born to Margaret and Edward Butler, who ran a bookmaking business, and was born in Paisley, which is located in Renfrewshire, Scotland. He comes from a Catholic background and his ancestors are Irish. When he was just six months old, his family made the move to Montreal, which is located in the province of Quebec in Canada. One year later, when his parent’s marriage began to fail, his mother uprooted their family from Quebec and moved back to Scotland with Gerard, who was then 18 months old.
After achieving the position of a head boy at St. Mirin’s and St. Margaret’s High School in Paisley, Butler gained admission to the University of Glasgow School of Law. In addition to that, he was a member of the Scottish Youth Theatre while he was a teenager.
When he was 16 years old, his father called him and asked to meet him at a restaurant in Glasgow. Before that, he did not see his father again. Butler wept for several hours after the meeting, and he reflected on the experience later, saying, “That reaction taught me how much grief can sit in this body of yours; pain and sorrow that you don’t realize you have until it is unleashed.”
He later stated that he “sort of blagged my way into” the position of president of the university legal society when he was a student there, but he held the position nonetheless. At the age of 22, Butler lost his father, who had been afflicted with cancer and passed away from the disease. He reflected on this time in his life and said, “I had gone from a 16-year-old who couldn’t wait to embrace life to a 22-year-old who didn’t care if he died in his sleep.” He said this in reference to the transition he had made during this time.
Before entering his final year of law school, Butler took a year off to travel and live in California, primarily in Venice Beach. During this time, he worked a variety of jobs, took numerous trips, and, according to his account, drank heavily. At one point, he was arrested for alcohol-related disorderly conduct.
When asked to recollect his actions throughout that year, he recalled the following: “I was completely out of control, and I tried to rationalize my behavior by telling myself, “I’m young; this is life.” This is just me being loud and in your face.'” After spending some time in the United States, he went back to Scotland to complete the final year of his legal education. He underwent ear surgery when he was a toddler, and the procedure left him with a deformed ear. He still experiences tinnitus and has hearing loss in his right ear as a result of the condition.
