Gilbert Gottfried Bio, Life, and Career:

Gilbert Jeremy Gottfried was an American stand-up comedian and actor. He was known for his exaggerated shrill voice, strong New York accent, and edgy, often controversial sense of humor. Gottfried passed away on April 12, 2022, after a career that spanned from February 28, 1955, to April 12, 2022.  In addition to his many other performances in cinema and television, he is known for providing the voice of Iago in the Aladdin animated series, Digit LeBoid in Cyberchase, Kraang Subprime in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and the Aflac Duck.

Additionally, he was recognized for his performance as Mr. Peabody in the film series Problem Child. Gilbert Gottfried’s Amazing Colossal Podcast was a podcast that Gottfried presented from 2014 until 2022. The podcast featured discussions of old films as well as interviews with celebrities, most frequently with seasoned actors, comedians, musicians, and comedy writers. His life and career were the subjects of the documentary Gilbert (2017), which was honored with the Special Jury Prize for Best Documentary at the 2017 deadCENTER Film Festival.

Gilbert Jeremy Gottfried was born on February 28, 1955, in the Coney Island neighborhood of the Brooklyn borough of New York City.  He is the son of Lillian Zimmerman, who worked as a housewife, and Max Gottfried, who owned and operated a hardware store. Above the family business, which was run by his father and grandfather, lived the family.  In spite of the fact that he was brought up in a Jewish family, he later admitted that he had eaten pork throughout his childhood. We were cognizant of our Jewish identity, but our knowledge of Jewish traditions, such as holidays and customs, was limited.

Even though I was never bar mitzvahed and we didn’t follow the holidays, I knew that if the Nazis came back, I’d be on the same train coach with everyone else. It’s like I kind of knew that.”  He was the younger brother of the photographer Arlene Gottfried, as well as Karen Gottfried (1950–2017).  After living in Coney Island for some time, the family relocated to Crown Heights in Brooklyn, and then to Borough Park after that. At the age of fifteen, Gottfried performed his debut routine on stage at The Bitter End in Greenwich Village. The performance took place at one of the venue’s Hootenanny Night events.  His two sisters went with him because they believed the performances their brother had done for the family were excellent enough for the stage and they urged him to give it a shot.

In his early routines, he primarily did impressions of classic actors and personalities, such as Humphrey Bogart and Boris Karloff. After that, he worked on the local comedy circuit and became known in the area as a “comic’s comedian.”  He began to perform edgier material after he became sick of his normal acts. From then, he worked the local comedy circuit. One of these incidents took place when Gottfried was performing as the opening act for Belinda Carlisle at a venue that was attended by younger girls and their mothers. Gottfried said, “I tried doing my regular act for about five minutes, then I just launched into the filthiest stuff I could think of.”

And the following day, I received a call from my agency stating “Everybody there adored you,” which is industry jargon for “You’re fired. Gottfried was recognized by the producers of Saturday Night Live in 1980 when the show was in the process of being revamped with new staff members and new comedians, and they hired him as a cast member for season 6. When Gottfried appeared on Saturday Night Live, he did not squint or speak in his signature annoying screeching accent; in fact, he hardly ever used that voice at all. His SNL image was vastly different from his later portrayal.

During his time on the show, which lasted for 12 episodes, he appeared in only a few sketches. Gottfried said that having to portray a corpse in a joke about a sports organist who was paid to play improper music at a funeral was one of the lowest points in his career. He did, however, have two celebrity impersonations, including David Stockman and Roman Polanski, in addition to one recurring character, Leo Waxman, who was the husband of Denny Dillon’s Pinky Waxman in the “What’s It All About?” skit, which was a recurring talk show sketch.

In April of 1987, Gottfried starred in a comedy special that was broadcast as part of the Cinemax Comedy Experiment series. The special lasted for half an hour. It was then followed by the comedy pilot Norman’s Corner, which Larry David co-wrote prior to the creation of Seinfeld. Gottfried portrayed the titular character in that show, and he starred in it.  In the 1987 film Beverly Hills Cop II, Gottfried portrayed the role of accountant Sidney Bernstein. In this picture, Gottfried was reunited with his buddy and fellow former cast member of Saturday Night Live, Eddie Murphy.  In the same year, Gottfried made his first appearance on The Howard Stern Show.
