Gloria Purvis, is an African-American Catholic speaker, author, podcaster, and activist for Whole Life. As I was growing up, I would spend a lot of time at the beach, and as a result, I became familiar with the Gullah and Geechee languages that are spoken in that region. Yep. I was born and raised in the South, so it’s only natural that I enjoy drinking sweet tea. Since you are a great deal younger than I am, by the time you were born, laws prohibiting discrimination on the basis of race had already been passed. In the mid-1960s, the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act were passed into law, which together led to the end of segregation in public schools as a result of the Brown v. Board of Education decision. But you were raised in a time when segregation and Jim Crow laws were still in effect.

It must mean a lot to you now that the people of your home state, South Carolina, are represented in the Senate of the United States by an African American who goes by the name of Tim Scott. South Carolina was the first state to secede from the union and was the very heart of the Confederacy. Yes. The fact that Senator Tim Scott is the first African-American senator elected from a southern state after the end of Reconstruction marks a significant turning point in American history. Senator Scott and I both gave speeches at a rally held in front of the Supreme Court of the United States in support of life and the protection of women. It made me happy to see a person from my home state of South Carolina there. The white community in South Carolina was overwhelmingly behind him, which contributed to his victory in the election.

That appears to be a significant amount of advancement to me. What are your thoughts on the matter? The reelection of Senator Scott heralds an enormous change when one considers the resistance shown by whites in the south to the liberation of African-Americans both before and after the Reconstruction Era. It is a significant step forward. It appears that a sufficient number of people in South Carolina share his view that he should act in a manner consistent with what he considers to be in the citizens’ best interests. In 2012, then-former Governor Nikki Haley appointed him to the position, and two years later, he was successfully re-elected. He is running for re-election at this time. The fact that he was elected to the Senate represents a step in the right direction.
