Graham Coxon Bio, Life, and Career:

Graham Leslie Coxon is an English musician, singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and painter who rose to notoriety as a founding member of the rock band Blur. He was born on March 12, 1969, in England. Coxon is featured on all eight of Blur’s studio albums due to his roles as the group’s main guitarist and secondary vocalist. However, the album Think Tank from 2003 only has his performance on one track due to his temporary leave from the band during the recording process for the album.

Since 1998, he has also been actively pursuing a solo career, during which he has produced every one of his solo albums and performed every instrument on each one. Coxon is a visual artist in addition to being a musician; he designed the cover art for all of his solo albums as well as the cover art for Blur’s 13 albums (1999). Coxon is able to record his CDs with minimal assistance from studio musicians because he is proficient in a number of instruments.

Adrian Deevoy, a critic for the magazine Q, has written: “Coxon is a phenomenally talented musician. His erratic playing style, which is full of chord slides, quick pull-offs, miniature arpeggios, and fragmented runs, appears to owe more to his training on the saxophone than to any traditional guitar instruction he may have had.”  Oasis band member Noel Gallagher has referred to him as “one of the most talented guitarists of his time” and called him “one of the most inventive lead guitarists of his generation.”

In a poll conducted by the BBC in 2010, respondents ranked Coxon as the 15th greatest guitarist of the past 30 years. Coxon was born in Rinteln, West Germany, while his father, Bob Coxon, was serving as a clarinet player and band leader in the British Army there. Coxon’s grandfather was also a clarinet player and band leader.

When he was a child, his family relocated to Spondon, Derby, England, and it was during this time that he first became a supporter of Derby County. After that, he went to Colchester, Essex, which is located in South East England. It was there that he grew up and met fellow Blur member Damon Albarn at The Stanway School, which was formerly known as Stanway Comprehensive. He was 11 years old at the time. Two separate times, he was a guest on the hit children’s show Blue Peter on the BBC.

At Goldsmiths College in London, where he studied Fine Arts for a total of two years, Coxon first became acquainted with bassist Alex James. During his tenure there, he interacted with rising stars in the art world such as Damien Hirst, Michael Landy, Sam Taylor-Wood, and Abigail Lane, who would go on to become some of the most prominent figures in the Britart movement. The work of Pink Floyd founder Syd Barrett, which he had discovered by 1986, had a significant impact on his musical inclinations, which were significantly influenced by Syd Barrett.

Because of the growing success of his band at the time, Seymour, decided to leave college to pursue a career in music full-time. His band eventually changed its name to Blur in response to criticism from their record label, Food Records, that Seymour sounded too “student-ish.” They provided the band with a list of potential names, one of which was “The Shining Path,” and it also contained “Blur.” Coxon’s lo-fi and alternative musical style and interests inspired the band’s less popular work in the late 1990s.

In addition to playing all of the band’s guitars and supplying backup vocals and sometimes drumming, Coxon was also responsible for all of the band’s backing vocals. He provided the lead vocals for a number of songs, such as “Red Necks,” “You’re So Great,” and “Coffee & TV” from the album Blur. He also provided the lead vocals for a portion of the chorus of “Tender,” the bridge of “Lonesome Street,” and a portion of “Thought I Was a Spaceman” from The Magic Whip.

Coxon experienced a growing sense of exhaustion and mistrust toward the music industry during the period in 1995 that was termed by the media as the “Battle of Britpop.” His behavior was occasionally embarrassing, such as when he refused to appear in the music video for the song “Country Home” by Blur unless he was allowed to dress up as a milkman and refrain from participating in any activity that made him feel uneasy. Coxon was admitted to the Priory Hospital in November 2001 for a period of 28 days in order to receive treatment for alcoholism.

At this time period, Blur started the recording sessions that would eventually result in the content for their subsequent album, titled Think Tank. In February of 2002, Coxon went back into the studio with the band to finish recording the remainder of Think Tank. However, after five days, he was asked by the band’s manager at the time, Chris Morrison, not to return to the studio because the other members of the band had informed Morrison that the recording session was not going very well with him present. Coxon complied with Morrison’s request. Think Tank was eventually completed.
