Harvey Keitel Bio, Life, and Career:

Harvey Keitel is a well-known American actor who was born on May 13, 1939. He is well known for his portrayal of “tough guy” characters as well as characters with questionable morality. He came to prominence during the New Hollywood movement, and he has maintained a long-running association with the director Martin Scorsese, starring in six of his films: Who’s That Knocking at My Door (1967), Mean Streets (1973), Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore (1974), Taxi Driver (1976), and The Last Temptation of Christ (1988) in addition to The Irishman (2019).

On May 13, 1939, Keitel was born in New York City,  where he was raised. the youngest child of Jewish settlers in the United States. His mother, Miriam (née Klein; 1911–1987), was from Romania, while his father, Harry Keitel, was from Poland. Both of his parents immigrated to the United States. His mother and father were proprietors of a lunch counter, and his father was also self-employed as a milliner.

He spent his childhood in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Brighton Beach with his older sister Renee and older brother Jerry. He received his high school education from Abraham Lincoln. At the age of 17, he signed up to serve in the Marine Corps. Following his discharge from the military, he worked as a court stenographer for ten to twelve years before beginning a career in acting.

Keitel went to the HB Studio, where he also trained with Stella Adler and Lee Strasberg, and finally got roles in some Off-Broadway productions as a result of his training. During this time, Keitel auditioned for the director Martin Scorsese and was offered a starring role as “J.R.” in Scorsese’s debut feature film, Who’s That Knocking at My Door (1967). Keitel went on to play the role throughout the rest of the film’s production.

When asked about Keitel’s performance as Willard, Coppola expressed her dissatisfaction, noting that the actor “found it difficult to play him as a passive onlooker.”

After analyzing the film from the first week, director Francis Ford Coppola decided to replace Harvey Keitel with Martin Sheen, a casting session favorite. In the 1980s, Keitel continued to work in both the theatrical and film industries, frequently playing the typecast part of a violent criminal.

After playing a corrupt police officer in the 1983 thriller Copkiller (which also starred singer John Lydon), Keitel took on a supporting part in the romantic drama Falling in Love (1984), which starred Robert De Niro and Meryl Streep.

Keitel was nominated for an Academy Award for his work in the latter film. Between the years 1985 and 1988, he was one of the busiest character actors around, appearing in a total of 16 films and telefilms.
