Julia Galef Bio, Life and Career:

Julia Galef whose full name is Julia Elaine Galef and who was born on July 4, 1983, is one of the co-founders of the Center for Applied Rationality. Since the podcast’s start in 2010, she has served as the host of Rationally Speaking, the official podcast of the New York City Skeptics. She has been joined on the show by co-host and philosopher Massimo Pigliucci, and the show was produced by Benny Pollak until 2015. Galef was born into a Jewish household in the state of Maryland in the year 1983. Columbia University granted her a Bachelor of Arts degree in statistics. She became a member of the New York City Skeptics board of directors the following year (2010).

In 2012, she was one of the original co-founders of the Center for Applied Rationality and later took the helm as its president. Workshops are also provided by the organization to teach individuals how to internalize and apply strategies that are based on the principles of rationality on a more consistent basis. This helps individuals improve their reasoning and decision-making abilities, which in turn helps them accomplish their goals. In 2015, she was honored by the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry by being given the title of fellow. Alongside the philosopher of science Massimo Pigliucci, Galef has been a co-host on the Rationally Speaking Podcast since its inception in 2009. On February 1, 2010, they distributed their pilot episode for the first time.

Conversations with public intellectuals including Neil deGrasse Tyson, Lawrence Krauss, James Randi, and Peter Singer have been included on the podcast. At skeptic conferences, Galef gives presentations on rationality on a regular basis and moderates disputes. She has been known to provide talks to public audiences for groups such as the Center for Inquiry and the Secular Student Alliance. She spoke at the Northeast Conference on Science and Skepticism on multiple occasions between the years 2010 and 2015.

At Het Denkgelag 2015, Galef (on the right) served as the conversation’s moderator, bringing together Richard Dawkins and Lawrence Krauss. Together with her brother, Galef launched the blog Measure of Doubt in 2011. She has also contributed to the publications Religion Dispatches and Scientific American. She took over as the only host of the Rationally Speaking podcast in April of 2015 and has held that position ever since. The Atlantic, The Verge, and NPR have all made mention of Galef’s efforts as a writer, podcaster, and president of the Center for Applied Rationality.

In 2014, she contributed to Big Think by writing a number of articles and recording a number of brief films, some of which are currently being used in the Big Think Mentor’s session. As a result of the exposure she received through Big Think as an authority on the subject of rationality, she was the subject of interviews in 2014 with Forbes, Fast Company, and The Wall Street Journal. Particularly, the concept of keeping a “surprise journal” garnered a lot of attention. This is one of the methods that Galef uses to record instances in which her expectations were incorrect. This helps her recognize personal faulty assumptions that expose and counterweight the “bias blind spot.”

Keeping a “surprise journal” is one of the techniques that received a lot of attention. Galef claims that presenting newly acquired evidence in a manner that suggests it is unexpected can make it simpler to modify previously held ideas. In February 2016, Galef gave a TED talk titled “Why you think you’re right — even if you’re wrong.” In this talk, he encouraged critical self-skepticism and emphasized the importance of coming to the correct viewpoint by employing a “scout mindset” rather than working to ensure that your current viewpoint is seen as correct by employing a “soldier mindset.

In November 2016, the TED Radio Hour on National Public Radio broadcast a segment that highlighted the talk. Penguin released her debut work, titled The Scout Mindset: Why Some People See Things Clearly and Others Don’t, in the year 2021. When it comes to logic, Julia Galef frequently clarifies misunderstandings that are widespread among the general public. She frequently differentiates Max Weber’s “instrumental rationality” from Richard’s Foley’sdefinition of “epistemic rationality.” She defines epistemic rationality as a mode of reasoning that forms beliefs and conclusions by adhering to the rules of logic and the principles of probability theory.

On the other hand, she defines instrumental rationality as a process of decision-making in which people pick the action that maximizes their predicted utility, regardless of the goals they have in mind. Galef explored the idea of “Straw Vulcan,” which was first coined by the website TV Tropes to express the false notion about rationality as a mode of thinking that denies feelings such as love and lacks appreciation for beautiful things. It is a reference to the fictitious character Spock from Star Trek, who is a half-Vulcan and is sometimes held up as an example of this exaggerated conception of logic. Galef contends that given the extreme irrationality that Spock has witnessed in humans, the fact that he has not adjusted his expectations regarding the capacity of humans to make rational decisions is an example of irrationality in and of itself. At Skepticon in 2011, Galef presented a discussion on this topic to the audience.
