Rico Gagliano Bio, Life and Career:

Rico Gagliano is a journalist, podcaster, and radio broadcaster based in the United States.  He is most well-known for his roles as a co-host, alongside Brendan Francis Newnam, of the arts-and-culture radio show and podcast known as “The Dinner Party Download” on American Public Media, as well as a reporter for the public radio business show known as “Marketplace.” In addition to that, he has written for both the television and print media. He currently holds the position of Head of Audio at MUBI, a streaming service and film distributor geared toward cinephiles. Rico Gagliano is the son of Frank Gagliano, a playwright and theatre educator, and Sandra Gagliano, an opera singer and voice instructor.  Rico is the son of Frank and Sandra Gagliano.

At the University of Pittsburgh, where he also worked as a disc jockey at the student station WPTS-FM, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Film Studies. He attended the American Film Institute in Los Angeles and graduated with a Master of Fine Arts in Screenwriting. Gagliano was a contributor to the In Pittsburgh newsweekly, writing arts articles and commentary (now Pittsburgh City Paper). He held the position of music editor at the paper for a short time. Additionally, his artistic profiles, reviews, and previews were published on a consistent basis in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.  After relocating to Los Angeles in 1995, Gagliano began working as a freelance journalist for LA Weekly. He then transitioned to a career in public radio, writing pieces for programs such as Marketplace, All Things Considered, Weekend America, and the Savvy Traveler.

Between the years 2006 and 2010, Gagliano worked as a reporter for Marketplace on a full-time basis. In addition to reporting on local and international business and the economy, he also wrote and produced humorous sketches that were featured on the show under the title “Marketplace Players.”  Gagliano and Brendan Francis Newnam came up with the concept for the podcast “The Dinner Party Download” in the year 2008. The two were also responsible for co-hosting and co-producing the show, with Gagliano serving as the principal editor.

After beginning as a self-made, 15-minute broadcast that aired every other week, it was later produced and distributed by American Public Media, and in 2011, it was expanded to become a radio show that aired every week for an hour. It had a total of 400 episodes and was broadcast on 183 public radio stations around the country. Multiple podcasting awards, including the Webby Award for “Best Arts and Culture Show,” were up for grabs because of the quality of this program’s content.

At the Podcast Movement conference in 2016, the Academy of Podcasters awarded it the title of “Best Food and Drink Podcast.” The following year, it was a finalist for the same award. The interviews conducted by Gagliano were recognized with three awards: one from the National Arts and Entertainment Journalism Association, another from the Southern California Journalism Association, and one from the Los Angeles Press Club. A companion book titled “Brunch Is Hell: How to Save the World by Throwing a Dinner Party” was authored by Gagliano and Newnam and released by Little Brown Inc. in December 2017.

During the same week, the show broadcast its very last episode which was entirely brand new. During the sixth season of the television sitcom Mad About You, Gagliano worked as a writer’s assistant on the show. After that, he worked for a number of years as a writer for many comedic, animated, and reality shows on television, such as Disney’s Teamo Supremo and Cartoon Network’s Hero 108.  Alongside Damon Lindelof, who was one of the co-creators of Lost, and Steven S. DeKnight, who was the show’s director, he worked as a writer on the MTV show Undressed. [Gagliano served as a recurrent guest host for the daily news and culture shows “Press Play” and “Greater L.A.” on KCRW, which is the Southern California station of NPR. This role spanned the years 2019 and 2020.
