Kevin Harlan Bio, Life and Career:

Kevin Harlan is a well-known American announcer for radio and television sports broadcasts. He was birth on June 21, 1960. He is the son of former Green Bay Packers executive Bob Harlan, and he now works as a play-by-play announcer for the NBA on TNT and broadcasting games for the NFL, NBA, and college basketball on CBS. Until 2008, Harlan provided the commentary for Westwood One Radio’s coverage of the Final Four. 2010, he marked the beginning of his tenure as the leading commentator for Westwood One’s Monday Night Football broadcasts.

He called his first Super Bowl in the year XLV. He has aired 11 consecutive Super Bowls for Westwood One, starting with Super Bowl XLV and going all the way up to Super Bowl LV, making him the most consecutive broadcasts in radio and television networks (Jack Buck broadcast nine straight). Additionally, Harlan disclosed the CBS High-Definition feed of the Super Bowl XXXV in 2001. In addition, since 2003, he has been the play-by-play announcer for the preseason games of his local Packers for the statewide television network of the club. He won the National Sportscaster of the Year award from his fellow broadcasters in 2017 and 2019. Harlan has covered 12 championship games, including 11 Super Bowls and 5 Final Fours.

Harlan started broadcasting as a teenager, calling play-by-play for the boys’ basketball, football, and ice hockey teams at his alma mater, Our Lady of Premontre High School’s high school radio station, WGBP-FM. Since then, he has pursued a career in radio broadcasting. When his father, Bob Harlan, worked as an executive with the Green Bay Packers in the front office, the younger Harlan worked as a ball boy for the team while he was in his teens. Initially, he intended to earn his communications and mass media degree by enrolling at either the University of Wisconsin–Madison or the University of Notre Dame.

However, after receiving a personal recommendation from broadcaster Gary Bender to his father, Bob, Kevin decided to enroll at the University of Kansas and its School of Journalism and Mass Communications rather than either of the previously mentioned universities. Harlan was presented to Tom Hedrick, who served as the lead basketball play-by-play announcer for the Kansas Jayhawks. Tom Hedrick took notice of Harlan’s passion for sports broadcasting and instantly saw him as a potential student to train in the field. Hedrick gave Harlan a job on the sidelines during his first year. Hedrick gradually came to see Harlan as his understudy and a replacement commentator on days when he had other obligations. In 1982, Harlan received his degree in broadcast journalism from the university.

Harlan began his career as the TV and radio voice of the NBA’s Kansas City Kings (now known as the Sacramento Kings) in 1982 at 22, just after graduating from college. After that, he worked for one year as a basketball announcer for his alma school, the University of Kansas. Afterward, he called games for the National Football League’s Kansas City Chiefs from 1985 to 1993.

Before that, he spent many years hosting and creating related pre-game and post-game programming while hell in college. In addition, from 1986 to 1989, Harlan served as the play-by-play announcer for the University of Missouri football and basketball games. From 1989 through 1998, he was the play-by-play announcer for the Minnesota Timberwolves of the National Basketball Association. At the network level, Harlan called National Football League football for NBC in 1991, college football for ESPN in 1992–1993, and the NFL for Fox from 1994–1997.

He joined Turner Sports in 1996 to broadcast NBA playoff games and has continued to do so ever since. In 1997, he began calling plays during the season and has done so ever since. It was in 1998 that he first started working for CBS.

He has worked for Westwood One as a broadcaster for 12 straight Super Bowls, ranging from XLV through LVII. Jack Buck continuously transmitted nine times in a row, although the record for most consecutive broadcasts on radio and television networks is twelve. Additionally, Harlan broadcasted the CBS High-Definition feed of the Super Bowl XXXV in 2001. In addition, since 2003, he has been the play-by-play announcer for the preseason games of his local Packers for the statewide television network of the club.

He won the National Sportscaster of the Year award from his fellow broadcasters in 2017 and 2019. Harlan has covered 13 Super Bowls and five Final Fours as a broadcaster. Along with Dick Stockton and Marv Albert, he is one of only three announcers in the history of the four major sports to have accumulated over 3000 national network broadcasts throughout their careers. In addition, Harlan has called preseason games for the Jacksonville Jaguars, Chicago Bears, and Green Bay Packers; boxing for Mike Tyson’s fight against Buster Mathis Jr. in 1995; basketball games during the now-defunct Goodwill Games, which Time Warner-owned; college sports on ESPN; and several bowl games during college football seasons. Additionally, from 2005, Harlan has contributed his voice to the NBA 2K video game franchise.

In 2017, Harlan was selected by his colleagues as the National Sportscaster of the Year by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association (NSMA). In 2019, the National Sports Media Association (NSMA) awarded him National Sportscaster of the Year. Additionally, The Athletic gave him the title of 2019 National Sportscaster of the Year.
