John Smoltz Bio, Life and Career:

John Andrew Smoltz was birth on May 15th, 1967, in the city of Warren, which is located in Michigan. He was recognized as an All-State performer in baseball and basketball while attending Waverly High School in Lansing, Michigan, from which he graduated. After John Smoltz completed his education and graduated, he was selected by the Detroit Tigers in the twenty-second round of the 1985 free-agent draft. Bill Schudlich and Ken Madeja were responsible for his signing with the team. In August of 1987, he was the player the Braves received in exchange for Doyle Alexander.

John Smoltz made his official debut in the big leagues in 1989 and was a staple in the starting rotation for the Atlanta Braves until March of 2000, when he had surgery for a ligament graft. After spending more time on the injured list in 2001, Smoltz entered the Braves bullpen during the middle of the season and quickly established himself as one of the most dominant closers in the National League.

He returned to the squad the following year. FOX MLB’s principal game commentator is John Smoltz, a first-ballot inductee into the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame and an eight-time All-Star recipient of the National League Cy Young Award. Smoltz is in the broadcast booth for the network’s top regular season games, the All-Star Game, and a complete slate of playoff contests, including assignments for the Division Series, League Championship Series, and World Series. In addition, Smoltz calls the network’s biggest regular season games.

Smoltz began his career in broadcasting with FOX Sports in 2014, and after just two seasons with the network, he was promoted to the central broadcast team. Together with Joe Buck, a play-by-play announcer for the World Series and has won an Emmy Award, he called his first World Series in 2016, and the two of them have been the voice of the Fall Classic for the last four years in a row.

Smoltz, who pitched with his right hand, was selected for induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame on the very first vote in 2015, which is a monument to the greatness of his remarkable playing career. He spent 21 years playing in the big leagues, during which time he pitched 3,473 innings in 723 games (481 starts), with a record of 213-155 with a career earned run average of 3.33, and struck out 3,084 batters. Smoltz became the first pitcher in Major League Baseball’s history to achieve 200 victories and 150 saves in his career. He accomplished this remarkable feat by serving as a closer from 2001 to 2004 and accumulating 154 saves.

In baseball, John has a significant list of on-field achievements, including selection to the Major League Baseball All-Star team eight times; receipt of the National League Cy Young Award in 1996; receipt of the National League Rolaids Relief Award in 2002; and selection as the Most Valuable Player of the National League Championship Series in 1992. John has played in 723 career games and has racked up 213 wins and 154 saves. He is one of just 16 pitchers in the history of Major League Baseball to have recorded 3,000 strikeouts.

John has not only established himself as one of the best pitchers in Major League Baseball, but he has also committed himself to positively impacting the community in and around Atlanta. In addition to being a devoted Christian, he is the proud parent of four children and played a significant role in establishing King’s Ridge Christian School, a brand-new institution in the metropolitan Atlanta area.

John has been honored with three awards: the Lou Gehrig Memorial Award in 2005, which is presented to the player who best exemplifies character and integrity; the Roberto Clemente Award in 2005, which is given to players who combine strong play on the field with solid work in the community; and the Branch Rickey Award in 2007, which is given to players who have demonstrated exceptional community service. These awards were given to John because of his excellent work off the field.

As of right now, John is working as a television analyst for both Turner Sports and the MLB Network. In addition to his wife Kathryn and their four children, John Andrew Jr., Rachel Elizabeth, Carly Maria, and Kelly Christina, he and his family make their home in Georgia.
Smoltz joined fellow Hall of Famers Tom Glavine and Greg Maddux atop a fearsome starting rotation that helped deliver the Atlanta Braves 14 division titles, five National League pennants, and the 1995 World Series championship.

Smoltz is remembered as one of the cornerstone pieces of the Atlanta Braves dynasty that ruled the National League throughout the 1990s and early 2000s. Smoltz was selected for participation in eight All-Star Games and had his best year in 1996, winning the Cy Young Award for the National League after compiling a record of 24-8 with an earned run average of 2.94. He also led the National League in wins (24) and strikeouts (276), both of which were his career highs.

Smoltz, also recognized as a dominating postseason competitor, threw a complete game shutout in Game 7 of the National League Championship Series in 1991, allowing the team to go to the World Series for the first time since 1958. The following year, in Game 7 of the World Series, he faced off against the Minnesota Twins starter Jack Morris for seven and one-third innings of scoreless baseball.

This game was chosen as the second-best game of the previous 50 years in the “MLB’s 20 Greatest Games” series shown on MLB Network in 2011. The following year, he won Games 1 and 4 of the National League Championship Series and started Game 7 to lead his team to another appearance in the World Series. He was awarded the Most Valuable Player award for the 1992 NLCS for his efforts. Smoltz’s career postseason earned run average is 2.67, and his 199 career strikeouts and 15 postseason victories rank second all-time in the history of the Major League Baseball playoffs.
