In addition to broadcasting collegiate athletics, the YES network also airs original series in the genres of biography, studio, and magazine programming. Since its start in March 2002, the network has been nominated for 266 Emmy Awards and has won 60 Emmys.

In addition to his job at YES, Kay hosts The Michael Kay program, a sports talk program that can be heard on weekdays in New York on ESPN Radio 98.7. In December 2012, the respected journal Radio Ink, which covers the radio business, ranked him as America’s second-most critical local sports talk show presenter. He has been in the position since 2006. Play-by-play responsibilities for the National League Divisional Series between the Philadelphia Phillies and the Milwaukee Brewers in 2008 were handled by Kay for the ESPN Radio Network.

In addition, Kay has been a regular contributor to the Emmy Award-winning Sports Reporters television program, which airs on ESPN on Sunday mornings. Kay was a reporter for the New York Yankees for the M.S.G. Network from 1989 to 2002, when she began working for the YES Network. In 1992, he took on the additional responsibility of serving as a reporter for the Knicks locker room and remained in that capacity until the 1998–1999 season.

In addition to his work in television, the native of the Bronx, New York, served as a Yankees commentator for WABC Radio from 1992 until the end of the 2001 season, which was capped off with a memorable World Series matchup between the Yankees and the Diamondbacks. At the New York Metro Achievement in Radio Awards in 2000, Kay was recognized as having achieved the “Best Sports Reporter” distinction. Michael Kay and John Sterling started airing a nightly sports radio call-in program on WABC Radio during the winter months in 1998. The show was called Sports Talk, and John Sterling and Michael Kay hosted it. After receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from Fordham University in 1982, Kay began working at SportsPhone and serving as the New York Pro Summer Basketball League public address announcer not long after graduation.

In 1982, Kay was allowed to work for the New York Post as a writer for a general assignment. Two years after that, in 1984–1985, he started writing about collegiate basketball, and then, from 1986–1988, he worked as a reporter covering the New Jersey Nets. In 1987, he transitioned to baseball at the Post and began working as a beat writer for the Yankees. While working there, he was offered his first job in television with the M.S.G. Network, and he accepted the role of host for the Hot Stove League section of M.S.G.’s SportsNight.

In 1989, Kay moved to the New York Daily News, where he worked as a reporter covering the Yankees. In 1992, he began his career as a broadcaster covering the Yankees for WABC Radio. Before transitioning to television in 2002 to become the principal play-by-play man for YES, Kay remained in the role of play-by-play announcer for the Yankees on the radio for ten years. During that time, the team won four World Series titles.
