Krishna Das Bio, Life, and Career:

Jeffrey Kagel, better known as Krishna Das, was an American vocalist who was born on May 31, 1947. He is most known for his performances of kirtan, which is a style of Hindu devotional music (chanting the names of God). Since 1996, he has released a total of seventeen albums. At the 2013 Grammy Awards, which were held in Los Angeles, he gave a performance, and his album Live Ananda (2012) was nominated for the 2013 Grammy Award for Best New Age Album. The New York Times referred to him as “the chant master of American yoga” in one of their articles.

Blue Oyster Cult was initially founded as a garage rock band on Long Island in June of 1967 by a handful of teenagers and young adults who were attending high school and college at the time. Jeff Kagel, who was a student at the State University of New York at Stony Brook at the time, was the band’s lead singer for a short period of time before he left the band. In August of 1970, Krishna Das embarked on a journey to India where he, much like Ram Dass before him, eventually became devoted to the Hindu guru Neem Karoli Baba (Maharaj-ji).

When he was up for a Grammy Award in 2013, the Grammy organization dubbed him the “Rockstar of Yoga.” He went on to win the award that year. Many other musicians have collaborated with Krishna Das over the years. Hans Christian has appeared as a guest multi-instrumentalist on not one, but two of his albums, and Sting is featured on one of his albums titled Pilgrim Heart. Gathering in the Light is the title of an album on which he featured with Baird Hersey & Prana, a group that combines Western music and overtone singing. This album features the artist.

All One (2010), which also features Rick Allen of Def Leppard on percussion and Steve Gorn on flute, was co-produced by Walter Becker of Steely Dan, who also contributed to playing bass guitar on the album. On a number of albums, tabla player Ty Burhoe can be heard. The album Breath of the Heart was produced by Rick Rubin. In 2014, Krishna Das was instrumental in the establishment of the Kirtan Wallah Foundation, a 501 charitable organization whose mission is to disseminate the teachings of Krishna Das’s spiritual guide, Neem Karoli Baba. Om Nama Shivaya Gurave is an Anusara Yoga invocation, and John Friend, the founder of Anusara Yoga, asked Krishna Das to write the song for it.

According to Friend, this work was penned in the summer of 1998 at a remote mountain retreat center in the state of Utah. Around the beginning of the twenty-first century, Bernie Glassman, the founder of Zen Peacemakers, requested that Krishna Das compose a melody for the chant Gates of Sweet Nectar. Gates of Sweet Nectar is a traditional Buddhist chant from Japan that Glassman had previously translated into English. After producing a tune, Krishna Das came to the conclusion that it would complement the Hanuman Chalisa in terms of both the melody and the lyrics. This is due to the fact that the former expresses a yearning to give one’s heart, while the latter provides the fortitude to carry out a duty.
