Eric Clapton Bio, Life, and Career:

Eric Patrick Clapton CBE is a rock and blues guitarist, singer, and composer from the United Kingdom. He was born on March 30, 1945. It is generally agreed that he is among the most successful and important guitarists in the history of rock music.  Clapton came in at number two on Rolling Stone’s list of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time” and he was named number four on Gibson’s list of the “Top 50 Guitarists of All Time.”  In 2009, he was also ranked fifth on Time magazine’s list of “The 10 Greatest Electric Guitar Players.”

This honor was bestowed upon him. Clapton joined the Yardbirds in 1963, succeeding Top Topham as the band’s founding guitarist. Prior to this, Clapton had played in a variety of various local bands. Clapton quit the Yardbirds in 1965 to play with John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers because he was unhappy with the transformation of the band’s sound from blues rock to a more radio-friendly form of pop rock.

After recording one album with Mayall, Clapton parted ways with him in 1966 and went on to establish the power trio Cream with Ginger Baker on drums and Jack Bruce on bass. In this band, Clapton played prolonged blues improvisations as well as “arty, blues-based psychedelic pop.”  With the dissolution of Cream in November 1968, he joined Baker, Steve Winwood, and Ric Grech to establish the blues rock band, Blind Faith.

They released one album and went on one tour before disbanding. In 1970, Clapton started his career as a solo artist. Clapton was born on March 30, 1945, in Ripley, Surrey, England. His parents were Patricia Molly Clapton, who was 16 years old at the time, and Edward Walter Fryer, who was 25 years old and a soldier from Montreal, Quebec. Patricia Molly Clapton passed away in March 1999. Edward Walter Fryer passed away on May 15, 1985.  When Clapton was born, Fryer was in the military for a while, and then he came back to Canada.

Clapton spent his childhood under the impression that his grandmother, Rose, and her second husband, Jack Clapp, Patricia’s stepfather, were his biological parents. He was under the impression that his mother, Patricia, was actually his older sister. Patricia was Rose’s stepdaughter. The fact that the two families’ surnames are so similar has led to the widespread but incorrect assumption that Eric Clapton’s real surname is Clapp (the name Reginald Cecil Clapton belonged to Rose’s first husband, who was also Eric Clapton’s maternal grandfather).

When a number of years had passed, his mother wed another Canadian soldier and relocated to Germany at which point Eric was left in the care of his grandparents in Surrey. Clapton became a member of the Yardbirds, a band that played rhythm and blues, in October 1963 and remained with the group until March 1965.

Clapton developed a unique style by fusing the influences of Chicago blues with prominent blues guitarists such as Buddy Guy, Freddie King, and B.B. King. As a result of his efforts, Clapton quickly rose to prominence as one of the most talked-about guitarists in the British music industry.  The band initially played Chess/Checker/Vee-Jay blues pieces, and when they took over the Rolling Stones’ tenure at the Crawdaddy Club in Richmond, London, they began to develop a considerable cult following. The club is located in London.

They did a tour of England with the American bluesman Sonny Boy Williamson II, and a collaborative LP album that was recorded in December 1963 was released the following year in 1965. Clapton made his debut performance at the Royal Albert Hall in London in 1964, and since then, he has returned to the venue more than 200 times to give concerts. Chris Dreja, who played rhythm guitar for the Yardbirds, reported that if Eric Clapton broke a guitar string during a performance, he would remain on stage and replace it.

The English crowds would pass the time by performing what is known as a “slow handclap” as the delay continued. Giorgio Gomelsky was the one who gave Clapton the nickname “Slowhand,” which is a pun on the sluggish handclapping that occurred whenever Clapton had to stop playing his guitar in order to replace a string. The Yardbirds were Clapton’s opening act for his debut performance at the Royal Albert Hall in London, which took place in December 1964.

Since that time, Eric Clapton has given more than 200 performances at the Hall. He has described the experience of performing there as being similar to “playing in my front room.” Alice Ormsby-Gore, a British aristocrat, was Eric Clapton’s lover from the late 1960s until 1974; during this time, the couple was frequently misreported as being engaged. He briefly dated funk vocalist Betty Davis.

He wed Pattie Boyd on March 27, 1979, in Tucson, Arizona, but their union was plagued by his adulterous affairs and his violent behavior against his wife throughout their marriage. In an interview that took place in 1999 with The Sunday Times, Clapton admits to having raped and abused his wife during the time that they were married, when he was also a “full-blown” alcoholic.
