Lanny Poffo Bio, Life, and Career:
The western Canadian city of Calgary is where Lanny Poffo was born on December 28, 1954. Angelo John Poffo was the wrestling legend known as The Masked Miser and The Carpet Bagger. His mom, Judy Poffo, was a park district PE teacher in Chicago. He was the younger of his parents’ two children and had an older brother named Randy Poffo, who went by the stage names Randy Savage and Macho Man and became a famous professional wrestler, actor, rapper, and commentator.
The boys’ father was in the military, so they moved about a lot when they were little. Eventually, they settled in Downers Grove, a municipality in DuPage County, Illinois. They attended a variety of parochial schools throughout their younger years in order to follow a uniform curriculum.
Lanny went to high school in Downers Grove, Illinois, and graduated from Downers Grove North in 1973. He had grown up around wrestlers and found the sport intriguing. Nonetheless, he was also a talented athlete in other areas, including basketball and football. Beginning his professional wrestling career on April 16, 1974, Lanny Poffo faced off against Wayne Cowan in the inaugural All-South Wrestling Alliance event. Despite the loss, he stayed with the company for another couple of months and won a rematch against Cowan on April 23 and a bout against Great Fuji on May 14.
The first time he worked with his dad to beat The Royal Kangaroos was on July 9, 1974. Once they started, they never stopped making appearances as a tag team. They joined the NWA-affiliated promotion Big Time Wrestling in November 1974 and stayed with them until March 1978. Big Time Wrestling was situated in Detroit. Although they lost the opening game, they quickly became competitive.
Along with making appearances with his dad in 1975, Lanny also started competing on his own and beating wrestlers like Ron Martinelli, Denny Alberts, and Dario Romero. The Poffos captured the NWA World Tag Team Title in May, and the trio of Poffos later won “Four on Three Handicap Elimination” in July.
Lanny began his career as a solo act in 1976, and since then he has played an increasing number of singles bouts. On the May 29 episode of “Wrestling at the Chase,” his first opportunity to compete for the NWA World Heavyweight Title, he was defeated by Terry Funk. He kept making tag team appearances alongside his dad at the same time.
Lanny Poffo joined the NWA-related promotion Mid Atlantic Championship Wrestling in July 1976. While touring the MACW house show circuit with his brother Randy Poffo, they were able to defeat a number of established tag teams. After Randy’s departure from MACW in February 1977, Lanny continued to make solo appearances with the promotion until April 1978. When he first faced Randy in the ring in May, he won by disqualification. But in the end, Randy came out on top.
After brief appearances with Mid-South Wrestling in 1984 and Continental Wrestling Association in 1984–1985, Lanny signed with the World Wrestling Federation in the summer of 1985 and made his WWF Championship Wrestling debut on July 13. He quickly found his spot in the wrestling world by playing the role of the babyface.
At first, he worked as a high-flying, athletic enhancement talent on television shows. Perhaps as a result, he was immediately dubbed “Leaping Lanny,” a moniker that stuck with him until sometime in the early ’90s. During this time, he began bringing Frisbees to the arena, one of which bore a poem he had written. Then, before he threw the Frisbees into the throng, he would read the poem. Separate from that, he frequently competed in house shows, where he handily beat the competition.
Back in 1986–1987, he suited up for a string of Bunkhouse Battle Royales. Later that year, in a Battle Royal on Saturday Night’s Main Event, he was head-butted by André the Giant, causing such severe bleeding that he had to be carried out. In a poem he wrote on March 18, 1989, he publicly insulted the local Boston squad. His original name, Leaping Lanny, was changed to “Genius,” and he began appearing in the ring while dressed in a cap and gown. He had already established himself as a mainstay on the roster by the time 1990 rolled around, making regular appearances at major festivals and intimate house performances both. However, beginning in the summer of 1990, he started dropping matches and eventually took a paid leave of absence.
