Leonard Maltin Bio, Life, and Career:
Leonard Maltin entered this world on December 18, 1950, in the Big Apple. Isaac Aaron Maltin, Jr. is the offspring of Aaron Isaac and Jacqueline Maltin.
Starstruck: My Unlikely Road to Hollywood, by Leonard Maltin, could be misleadingly titled. Unlikely? Where else would a New York City-born, New Jersey-raised, lifelong movie buff, self-described “television junkie,” silent film comedy and Disney film enthusiast, and former adolescent film fanzine publisher go except to Hollywood? He’s got all the makings of a film critic, historian, and ambassador par excellence.
Maltin was Entertainment Tonight’s sole film critic for 30 years. For 45 years, he wrote and edited Leonard Maltin’s Movie Guide, which comedian Patton Oswalt dubbed “a paperback Kubrickian monolith of one man’s huge and far-reaching tastes.” Among his many books are Movie Comedy Teams, The Disney Films, and The Little Rascals.
Do not visit Starstruck in search of mudslinging. Definitely not a Maltin thing to do. Nonetheless, Maltin sprinkles the book with dozens of humorous, often self-deprecating anecdotes and grace notes, such as when Emma Thompson admitted to him that she preferred Buster Keaton to her home countryman Charlie Chaplin.
The news that Maltin had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease four years prior only came to light in 2018. He is not going to let anything stop him. To read his blog, “Movie Crazy,” visit leonardmaltin.com. Together with his daughter Jessie, he hosts the weekly podcast “Maltin on Movies”. Every Sunday, they do a live stream on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram where they discuss movies and take questions from viewers.
After a night out in Akron, Ohio, when he opened up about his profession and dealing with the sickness, he had just returned when we chatted with him. He claims that watching movies can help with any condition. ‘Entertainment Tonight’ had me come in to talk to Fess Parker, Dorothy McGuire, and Tommy Kirk before the Sunday night premiere of ‘Old Yeller’ on ABC. I thought that was very neat. I hadn’t seen Tommy in so long that I couldn’t place him. Initially, it took me by surprise. I looked for a way to ask, “Where have you been?” without seeming accusatory. The man explained that he had to stop working due to illness and that his employers had “become weary of him.”
Then, for the “Walt Disney Treasures” DVD release of “The Hardy Boys” in 2006, I had a great interview with him and Tim Considine. It warmed my heart to watch Tim’s undying respect for him in action.
Leonard Maltin, the renowned cinema historian, and critic, has been a staple on the long-running syndicated television series Entertainment Tonight since the show’s inception in the early 1980s. He was a regular on the Starz cable network and had his own nationally syndicated radio program, “Leonard Maltin on Video.” At the tender age of fifteen, Maltin began his writing career by editing and publishing the Film Fan Monthly, a magazine he would stay with for the next nine years. Maltin got his journalism degree from NYU and went on to write for publications like Variety and TV Guide as well as a wide range of film journals and national newspapers.
Leonard Maltin’s Movie and Video Guide, a yearly publication since 1969, is Maltin’s most well-known work as a writer, but he has also written several other highly regarded works, such as Behind the Camera, an examination of cinematography, The Whole Film Sourcebook, Leonard Maltin’s Movie Encyclopedia, and Of Mice and Magic: A History of American Animated Cartoons. He has served on the Advisory Board of the Hollywood Entertainment Museum since the mid-1990s and as president of the Los Angeles Film Critics Association. He lectured extensively while teaching at New York’s New School for Social Research for nearly a decade. Since he has always had a soft spot for cartoons, Maltin has created compilations of animated shorts for broadcast and cable television.
Maltin compiled synopses and reviews for films in his book Leonard Maltin’s Movie Guide, which debuted in September 1969 and was updated annually from October 1987 until September 2014, with the newer year’s date appended to the title. It has been known as Leonard Maltin’s Movie and Video Guide and TV Movies over the years. In order to accommodate a larger number of more recent movies, Leonard Maltin’s Classic Movie Guide was published as a companion volume in 2005, moving coverage of many films made no later than 1960 from the main book.
