Marlon Williams Bio, Life, and Career:

Marlon Williams is a New Zealand singer-songwriter, musician, and actor who was born on the 31st of December 1990 and currently resides in Melbourne, Australia. Although he is most recognized for his work as a solo artist, he performs and travels with his backing band The Yarra Benders. He initially gained popularity as the frontman of The Unfaithful Ways and for his collaborations with the singer Delaney Davidson. Williams was reared in the adjacent port town of Lyttelton after being born in the city of Christchurch to David Williams, a musician and librarian, and Jenny Rendall, a visual artist. David Williams was Williams’ father.

Jenny Rendall was Williams’ mother. His ancestry includes both the Ngai Tahu and the Ngai Tai.  Williams had a musical upbringing and participated in the choir of the Cathedral of the Holy Sacrament, which sang on tour throughout Europe in 2009 and 2010.  His formal education took place at Christchurch Boys’ High School, where he also gained the ability to play the guitar during his senior year. Williams, along with his high school classmates Sebastian Warne and Ben Woolley, as well as a physics instructor at the school named Simon Brouwer, established The Unfaithful Ways when Williams was 17 years old.

As a result of their performance at the Big Day Out, they swiftly rose to the top of the charts in New Zealand, and in 2011, they were shortlisted for a New Zealand Music Award. In 2011, Williams began playing alongside Delaney Davidson, who was already well-known for her work in the country music genre. They released three volumes of the series, Sad But True: The Hidden History of Country Music Songwriting, over the course of two years, and it garnered critical praise, including being named the New Zealand Country Song and Country Album of the Year in 2013.  2014 February saw the release of their most recent studio album. After moving to Melbourne, Australia, in the middle of 2013, Williams began performing solo around the city.

He also self-released the live album Live At La Niche, toured Australia with US performers Robert Ellis and Cory Chisel, and played at the Mullumbimby Music Festival.  At this time, he resided at the Yarra Hotel, which was located in the inner-city neighborhood of Abbotsford in Melbourne. In the spring of 2014, he began recording his first album under his own name. Despite the fact that the artist was based in Melbourne, the record was created in a studio in Lyttelton over the course of one year.

During that same year, he pulled together his backing band, which he properly dubbed The Yarra Benders after the pub/hotel in which they worked and resided.   Gus Agars, Dave Khan, and Ben Woolley are the musicians who make up The Yarra Benders. Guitarist Dan Parsons used to be a member of the band as well. Williams released his first self-titled solo album in April 2015 to widespread acclaim. The record made its debut at number 10 on the New Zealand Albums Chart and at number 31 on the Australian ARIA Albums Chart.

Rolling Stone Australia referred to the album as “captivating,” Metro Magazine referred to it as a “revelation,” and ToneDeaf referred to it as “one of the most outstanding country records this year.”  In the same years, he gave his first performance on national television on the music quiz show RocKwiz, which is broadcast on SBS Australia, and at the Sydney Opera House for the TEDxSydney event.

Williams signed with the US independent record company Dead Oceans in September of 2015, and the label was responsible for the album’s release and distribution around the world beginning on February 2, 2016. Williams had a recurring supporting role in the television miniseries The Beautiful Lie, which aired on ABC in 2015, and he was featured in all six episodes of the show.  The next year, he appeared in a supporting capacity in an independent film from New Zealand called The Rehearsal, which was released in 2016.

Williams made an appearance in the 2018 version of the film A Star is Born, which was directed by Bradley Cooper. Cooper invited Williams to be in the movie after seeing Williams sing at The Troubadour in Los Angeles and wanting him to be in the movie. During a tribute performance to Roy Orbison, Williams makes an appearance as a fictionalized version of himself, performing alongside musician Brandi Carlile and the figure played by Cooper. The 2019 edition of the Toronto International Film Festival was the venue for the international debut of True History of the Kelly Gang, a film directed by Justin Kurzel and starring Michael K. Williams in the role of George King.

Russell Crowe, Nicolas Hoult, Charlie Hunnam, and Essie Davis all-star in this movie as main characters.  Williams also has a supporting role in the upcoming feature picture Lone Wolf, which was shot in Australia over the course of the summer of 2019 and is scheduled for release the following year.  Williams appeared as Johnny Abbot in the 2021 season of the Netflix series Sweet Tooth.

Marlon Williams and the Yarra Benders made their appearance on American television for the first time on June 14, 2016, when they appeared as the musical guests on the late-night chat show Conan.  With Tami Neilson, Delaney Davidson, and Barry Saunders, Williams was included as a topic in the documentary titled The New Sound of Country on Prime Rocks, which was released in 2018 and filmed in New Zealand.
