Melissa Lou Etheridge is a rock singer-songwriter, guitarist, and activist for gay and lesbian rights who hails from the United States. She was raised in the city of Leavenworth, Kansas, by her parents, John Etheridge and Elizabeth Williamson. At the age of eight, she picked up the guitar and started playing. She went on to study music at the Berklee College of Music in Boston after she graduated from high school.
She was performing at lesbian clubs all over the Los Angeles area when she caught the notice of Chris Blackwell, chief executive officer of Island Records. Her subsequent years were marked by the release of a string of albums as well as hit singles. She has been nominated for fifteen Grammys, and she has won two of them. The song “Bring Me Some Water,” which was featured on Melissa Lou Etheridge’s debut studio album titled “Melissa Lou Etheridge,” was nominated for a Grammy Award in the category of Best Rock Vocal Performance by a Female Artist, as was the song “Brave and Crazy.”
It was for her single “Ain’t It Heavy” off of her album “Never Enough” that she was awarded her first Grammy in the category of Best Rock Vocal Performance by a Female Artist. The relationship between Etheridge and Julie Cypher lasted for a considerable amount of time.
During this time, Cypher became pregnant through the process of artificial insemination. David Crosby provided her with his sperm, and the resulting pregnancy resulted in the birth of two children: Bailey Jean and Beckett. The split between Etheridge and Cypher was made public in September of the year 2000.
Etheridge collaborated with Tammy Lynn Michaels from 2002 until 2010, during which time they participated in a commitment ceremony. They conceived their children through the use of an anonymous sperm donor. In 2010, they made the announcement that they were no longer together.
She revealed her intention to wed her companion Linda Wallen in 2013, and two years later, on May 31, 2014, the couple tied the knot at San Ysidro Ranch in Montecito, California.
