Melissa Lou Etheridge Bio, Life and Career:

Melissa Lou Etheridge is a rock singer-songwriter, guitarist, and activist for gay and lesbian rights who hails from the United States. She was raised in the city of Leavenworth, Kansas, by her parents, John Etheridge and Elizabeth Williamson. At the age of eight, she picked up the guitar and started playing. She went on to study music at the Berklee College of Music in Boston after she graduated from high school.

She was performing at lesbian clubs all over the Los Angeles area when she caught the notice of Chris Blackwell, chief executive officer of Island Records. Her subsequent years were marked by the release of a string of albums as well as hit singles. She has been nominated for fifteen Grammys, and she has won two of them. The song “Bring Me Some Water,” which was featured on Melissa Lou Etheridge’s debut studio album titled “Melissa Lou Etheridge,” was nominated for a Grammy Award in the category of Best Rock Vocal Performance by a Female Artist, as was the song “Brave and Crazy.”

It was for her single “Ain’t It Heavy” off of her album “Never Enough” that she was awarded her first Grammy in the category of Best Rock Vocal Performance by a Female Artist. The songs “Come to My Window,” which earned her a second Grammy for Best Rock Vocal Performance, Female, and “I’m the Only One,” which was nominated for Best Rock Song, were both born from the album “Yes I Am.” “Come to My Window” won the award. The show “Your Little Secret” had a fair amount of success.

The rock album “Breakdown” that she released was considered for a nomination for a Grammy Award. Her other albums are titled “Skin,” “Lucky,” “Fearless Love,” and “4th Street Feeling,” which is her most recent release. She received her education at David Brewer School, which is located in Leavenworth, Kansas. 1979 was the year when she received her diploma from Leavenworth High School. During her time at the high school, she participated in the inaugural “Power and Life” musical and dance group.

She taught herself to play the guitar when she was eight years old, and during her teenage years, she was a member of all-male country music ensembles. After that, she uprooted her life to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston. Chris Blackwell, chief executive officer of Island Records, saw Etheridge play in a number of lesbian clubs in and around Los Angeles and discovered her. In 1986, she signed a publishing deal that gave her the opportunity to write music for movies, one of which was “Weeds.”

Her debut album, simply named “Melissa Lou Etheridge,” was finished in just four days despite the fact that she received initial rejections. Her single “Bring Me Some Water” was put out for consideration for a Grammy Award in the category of Best Rock Vocal Performance, Female, in the year 1989.

The song “The End of the Innocence” by Don Henley has her providing background vocals. Her second studio album, which was titled “Brave and Crazy” and was released in 1989, was nominated for a Grammy Award in the category of Best Rock Vocal Performance, Female.

Etheridge established a scholarship for students interested in performing arts at Leavenworth High School in 1992. The fund is named after Etheridge’s father, who used to drive her around so that she could play in bands.

The success of her album “Yes I Am” from 1993 helped to enhance sales of her earlier releases. The album “Melissa Lou Etheridge” was awarded a certification from the RIAA of 2 Platinum, while the album “Never Enough” was awarded a certification from the RIAA of Platinum.

The album “Your Little Secret” that she released in 1995 was popular to a certain extent. The album was certified double platinum by the RIAA and spawned two songs that reached the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 chart: “I Want to Come Over” and “Nowhere to Go.”

The year 2001 saw the publication of the album titled “Skin,” which was characterized by reviewers as a dramatization of her breakup with companion Julie Cypher. A nomination was submitted for “I Want to Be in Love” to receive the award for Best Rock Vocal Performance, Female.

“Lucky” was her eighth studio album, and it was released in 2004. Despite the fact that the album was not as successful commercially as “Skin,” it did get her a Grammy nod for Best Rock Vocal Performance, Solo, for her cover of Greenwheel’s song “Breathe.”

Breast cancer was discovered to be Etheridge’s condition in October 2004. She sang “Piece of My Heart” as a tribute to Janis Joplin at the Grammy Awards the year after she lost her hair to chemotherapy. The performance took place the year after Janis Joplin died. The relationship between Etheridge and Julie Cypher lasted for a considerable amount of time.

During this time, Cypher became pregnant through the process of artificial insemination. David Crosby provided her with his sperm, and the resulting pregnancy resulted in the birth of two children: Bailey Jean and Beckett. The split between Etheridge and Cypher was made public in September of the year 2000.

Etheridge collaborated with Tammy Lynn Michaels from 2002 until 2010, during which time they participated in a commitment ceremony. They conceived their children through the use of an anonymous sperm donor. In 2010, they made the announcement that they were no longer together.

She revealed her intention to wed her companion Linda Wallen in 2013, and two years later, on May 31, 2014, the couple tied the knot at San Ysidro Ranch in Montecito, California.

The news that Melissa Lou Etheridge’s son Beckett Cypher had passed away was shared with the public on May 13, 2020. He was 21 years old when he passed away due to an illness caused by his opioid addiction.
