Spooner Oldham Bio, Life, and Career:

“Spooner Oldham” Dewey Lindon Oldham, Jr. was born on June 14, 1943. He is a session musician and songwriter from the United States. Organist by trade, he was a member of the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section and contributed to the recording of several R&B hits, including “When a Man Loves a Woman” by Percy Sledge, “Mustang Sally” by Wilson Pickett, and “I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You)” by Aretha Franklin.

These recordings were made at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Oldham collaborated with Dan Penn in the writing of several popular songs, including “Cry Like a Baby” (performed by the Box Tops), “I’m Your Puppet” (performed by James and Bobby Purify), “A Woman Left Lonely” and “It Tears Me Up” (performed by Percy Sledge), and others.

Oldham was born in the town of Center Star in the state of Alabama in the United States. He suffered childhood blindness in his right eye as a result of an accident that occurred when he was reaching for a frying pan and was struck in the eye by a spoon that he knocked off a shelf. As a consequence of this, his other students began to refer to him as “Spooner.”

Oldham began his career in music while he was a student at Lauderdale County High School, where he participated in a Dixieland jazz ensemble as a pianist. After that, he went to the University of North Alabama for a while, but he ultimately decided to focus his attention on playing at FAME Studios. In 1967, he made the trip to Memphis, Tennessee, where he began working at Chips Moman’s American Studios alongside Penn.

Later, Oldham relocated to Los Angeles, where he has continued his career as a sought-after backing musician, recording and performing with artists such as Bob Dylan, Aretha Franklin, Delaney Bramlett, Willy DeVille, Joe Cocker, the Hacienda Brothers, Linda Ronstadt, Jackson Browne, the Everly Brothers, Bob Seger, Dickey Betts, Cat Power, J.J. Cale, Frank Black, and The Mountain Goats, among others.

As a musician who frequently provides support for Neil Young, he appeared on the album Harvest Moon, which Young released in 1992 and received widespread acclaim for. In addition, Oldham was a participant in the concert video Neil Young: Heart of Gold and provided support for Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young on their Freedom of Speech tour in 2006.

In 1993, he participated among a large group of Memphis soul music veterans in the creation of the album Lonely Just Like Me, which was Arthur Alexander’s comeback and unintentional final studio recording. Oldham was a touring member of the Drive-By Truckers in 2007 when they were on their The Dirt Underneath tour. Oldham contributed his musical talents to Amos Lee’s third studio album, titled Last Days at the Lodge, which was released in 2008.
