Michael Lupica is an American author and former newspaper columnist. He is most known for his controversial comments on sports in the New York Daily News and his appearances on ESPN. Lupica was born on May 11, 1952, and his full name is Michael Lupica. Lupica was born in Oneida, New York, and it was there that he spent his childhood and early adolescence, attending St. Patrick’s Elementary School from kindergarten all the way through sixth grade. The following year, 1964, he moved to Nashua, New Hampshire, with his family.

There, he enrolled in middle school and then went on to attend Bishop Guertin High School, from which he graduated in 1970. In 1974, he received his degree in Philosophy from Boston College. He first rose to notoriety in the city of Pottstown, Pennsylvania, where he worked as a sportswriter. Beginning in the late 1980s, Lupica was a columnist for Esquire magazine where he published “The Sporting Life” column for eleven years. He is currently a columnist for Travel + Leisure Golf, where he publishes a regular piece.

In addition, he has written for publications such as Golf Digest, Parade, ESPN The Magazine, and Men’s Journal. He is the recipient of a number of honors, one of which is the Jim Murray Award, which was presented by the National Football Foundation in 2003. During the week, Lupica authored a number of sports pieces for the Daily News.

On Sundays, he published his signature column, “Shooting from the Lip,” which began with a regular editorial and then continued with a series of brief observations that were scathing about the previous week in sports. Later on in his career, he started publishing a weekly political column that he called “Mondays with Mike.” This piece has a very strong leaning toward the liberal ideology. He resigned from his position at the Daily News in July 2018.

Favorite targets of Lupica’s include the New York Yankees, James L. Dolan, Isiah Thomas, Notre Dame football, Rudy Giuliani, Michael Bloomberg, and former President George W. Bush and former Vice President Dick Cheney. He frequently mentions the Yankees’ enormous salary in the majority of his writings. In addition, Lupica has been a harsh critic of the recently constructed Yankee Stadium, and he has been an adamant opponent of the proposed West Side Stadium.

In a similar vein, he has voiced a great deal of disapproval regarding the Atlantic Yards development and the concurrent construction of the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Lupica has partnered with screenwriter William Goldman on the films Wait Till Next Year and Mad as Hell: How Sports Got Away From the Fans and How We Get It Back. Jackson and Parcells have both credited Lupica as a co-author on their respective memoirs.

Another book that Lupica authored was titled Summer of ’98: When Homers Flew, Records Fell, and Baseball Reclaimed America. In this book, Lupica described how the year 1998 and the home run chase between Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa allowed him to share his passion for baseball with his son. Lupica is known for being an outspoken critic of the steroid era in sports.

In addition to being a journalist, Lupica is also a novelist. Some of his works include the fictional New York City television reporter Peter Finley. One of them, titled Dead Air, was considered for the Edgar Allan Poe Award for Best First Mystery as well as the Anthony Award in 1987 for the same category. Additionally, it was converted into a television movie that was titled Money, Power, Murder.

He is the author of the novel Travel Team, which is geared toward younger readers. Both “Bump and Run” and “Wild Pitch” by Lupica were extremely popular. Red Zone, the sequel to Bump and Run, was released in the year 2003. Heat, his second children’s book, was released by Philomel in April 2006. The scandal involving Danny Almonte in the South Bronx Little League serves as the inspiration for the tale told in the movie Heat. Miracle on 49th Street, which was written by Lupica and intended for young readers, was released in October 2006. In 2007, Summer Ball, the sequel to Travel Team, was made available to the public.

Since its inception in 1988, ESPN’s The Sports Reporters has featured Lupica as a guest pundit on a rotating basis. He was also the host of The Mike Lupica Show, a short-lived television chat program that aired on ESPN2 and a radio show that aired on WFAN in New York City during the mid-1990s. Both of these endeavors were unsuccessful.

On the CBS Morning News, Good Morning America, and The MacNeil-Lehrer Newshour, he has appeared as a regular guest on multiple occasions. Since the early 1980s, Lupica has been a regular guest on Imus in the Morning. His visits can be heard on the radio.
