Stephen King Bio, Life and Career:

Stephen King, whose full name is Stephen Edwin King and who was birth on September 21, 1947, in Portland, Maine, United States, is an American novelist and short-story writer whose works are credited for revitalizing the subgenre of horror fiction in the latter half of the 20th century. King’s novels include the novel The Shining and the short story collection The Dark Tower.

King received his bachelor of arts in English from the University of Maine in 1970, where he also earned his degree. While composing short tales, he supported himself by doing a variety of occupations, including those in teaching and janitorial labor. Carrie, his first published book, was released in 1974 and was an instant hit with readers. The story follows a troubled young woman who discovers she has telekinetic abilities. The novel was adapted into films in 1976 and 2013.

King’s first work to combine horror, macabre, fantasy, and science fiction elements was Carrie. Carrie was the first of many novels that King would write using these elements. Several works fall into this category, including: ‘Salem’s Lot (1975; TV miniseries 1979 and 2004); The Shining (1977; film 1980; TV miniseries 1997); The Stand (1978; TV miniseries 1994 and 2020–21); The Dead Zone (1979; film 1983; TV series 2002–07); Firestarter (1980; film 1984); Cujo (1981; film 1983); The Running Man (1982; film 1987); Christine (1983; movie 1983);

Richard Bachman was the pen name under which Stephen King first published several of his early books, including “The Running Man.” After coming clean about his identity as a Bachman, Stephen King published a compilation of the first four Bachman books under his name in 1985 under the title The Bachman Books. This collection also featured King’s essay “Why I Was Bachman.” Later, King released two novels under Bachman’s name, The Regulators (1996) and Blaze (2007).

Mr. Mercedes (2014), Finders Keepers (2015), and End of Watch (2016), all written by Stephen King, make up a hard-boiled crime thriller trilogy that is centered on a former police officer named Bill Hodges. Another of King’s works is a series of novels titled The Dark Tower. The first book in the series, The Gunslinger, was published in 1982, and the eighth and final volume was released in 2012. In 2017, a movie version of the series was adapted and released in theaters.

In his works, Stephen King investigates almost every terrifying concept that can be conceived of, including but not limited to vampires, rabid canines, crazy murders, a pyromaniac, ghosts, extrasensory perception and telekinesis, biological warfare, and even a malicious vehicle. King’s works have sold more than 300 million copies worldwide. In his later novels, such as Dolores Claiborne, King moved away from the horror genre to present highly drawn psychological portrayals of his characters, many of whom were women who confronted harsh and challenging situations.

The novel highlights this departure from the horror genre. King’s works demonstrate that he is a brilliant storyteller who uses realistic detail, dynamic structure, and an unquestionable capacity to involve and terrify the reader. Even though his Writing is frequently criticized for being undisciplined and inelegant, his books demonstrate that King is a good storyteller.

The potential for politics and technology to interfere with or even endanger the existence of an individual human being is a recurring issue in his work, which he writes about extensively. The reoccurring topic of obsession in Stephen King’s Writing drives the tales of Christine, Misery, and Needful Things. It manifests in various guises and can wreak havoc on people, families, and whole communities.

At the beginning of the 1990s, Stephen King’s works had sold over 100 million copies all over the globe, and his name had become almost synonymous with the subgenre of horror fiction. His short stories have been compiled and published in several books, including Night Shift (1978), Nightmares and Dreamscapes (1993), Hearts in Atlantis (1999; film 2001), Just After Sunset (2008), and The Bazaar of Bad Dreams (2015). The blockbuster movie The Shawshank Redemption (1994) was based on the short tale “Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption,” which was first published in the anthology Different Seasons (1982).

There have been many more adaptations of King’s writings for television and cinema, and some of the most well-known filmmakers in the industry have been engaged in making these adaptations, including John Carpenter, David Cronenberg, Brian De Palma, Stanley Kubrick, and Rob Reiner. Although King was only involved in these projects on a limited scale, he did write the scripts for the television miniseries The Shining (1997) and Lisey’s Story (2021). In addition to it, he wrote several screenplays for movies.

On Writing (2000) was a book that Stephen King finished writing while healing from his terrible injuries after being hit by a vehicle. In this book, King discussed his career and the technique of Writing. In 2000, he published The Plant: Zenith Rising exclusively as an electronic book made available to readers over the Internet. Readers were asked but not required to pay for the book, and he made the novella UR available in the year 2009 only to users of the Kindle electronic reading device. He has also experimented with various methods of book distribution. Before it was published in print, the short tale “Drunken Fireworks” was made available in audiobook format in 2015.

King and his wife, Tabitha King, who is also a writer, have three children: a daughter named Naomi King, who is a minister in the Unitarian Universalist faith, and two boys named Joe Hill and Owen King, who are authors. Naomi King is the minister in the family. In the novel Sleeping Beauties (2017), which he co-wrote with Owen King, sleeping ladies transform into beautiful creatures encased in cocoons.In 2003, the National Book Foundation honored Stephen King with its Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters, and in 2015, the President of the United States awarded him the National Medal of Arts.
