Mike Tomlin Bio, Life and Career:

Mike Tomlin birth in 15 March 1972 (age 51 years), Hampton, Virginia, United States. He is the offspring of Julia Tomlin and Ed Tomlin, his parents. Tomlin and Eddie Tomlin are related via their parents. Eddie is Tomlin’s brother. Tomlin received his certificate in 1990 from Denbigh High School in Newport News, Virginia. Following the conclusion of his academic career at the College of William and Mary, he became a member of the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity. He was chosen for the second team as a wide receiver in the Yankee Conference during the 1994 season.

In 1995, he began his career as a coach at Virginia Military Institute, where his first position was as Bill Stewart’s wide receiver coach. During the 1996 season, Tomlin was a graduate assistant at the University of Memphis, where he worked mainly with the defensive backs and the special teams. Tomlin has a height of 1.75 meters and a weight of 85.0 kg. Tomlin was reared by his mother, Julia, and stepfather, Leslie Copeland, who married when Tomlin was six years old. Tomlin had a limited relationship with his biological father and was nurtured mainly by his mother and stepfather.

After spending some time as a membercoaching staff member at Arkansas State University, Tomlin was offered a position there in 1997 to instruct the defensive backs of the school’s football team. Tomlin stayed in that position for two seasons before accepting a position as the defensive backs coach at the University of Cincinnati. Tomlin first became aware of the Tampa 2 defense when working for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as the defensive backs coach in 2001 under the direction of Tony Dungy, the head coach at the time.

In 2006, Tomlin was selected by Brad Childress, the head coach of the Minnesota Vikings, to serve as the team’s team’s defensive coordinator. At William & Mary, Tomlin had played with the current Vikings safety Darren Sharper, and there were two guys on the Vikings roster who were older than Tomlin. Despite having the eighth-best overall defense in the NFL, the 2006 Vikings had the unique distinction of ending as the highest-ranked defense against the run and the lowest-ranked defense against the pass. This was even though the Vikings had the best total reason in the league.

After spending the whole 2006 season working as the defensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings, Tomlin was invited to interview for the vacant head coaching position with the Pittsburgh Steelers, who had won the Super Bowl in 2005. Despite just having one season of experience as a defensive coordinator, Tomlin was promoted to head coach of the Steelers on January 27, 2007, making him the team’s sixteenth head coach.

Tomlin is the eleventh African-American to hold the position of head coach in the history of the NFL and the first to do so for the Steelers team. The Rooney Rule, which demands that clubs interview at least one minority candidate when hiring a new head coach, was proposed by Dan Rooney, the owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers and the chairman of the diversity committee for the NFL. This rule requires teams to interview at least one minority candidate when selecting a new head coach. The particulars of Tomlin’s contract were kept from the general public. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette said that the parties had reached a four-year deal with an annual compensation of $2.5 million and an option for a fifth year.

He is the first head coach in the club’s history to win his first game against the Cleveland Browns, a rival team in the same division, and he is the head coach of the third squad in a row to accomplish this feat. Tomlin did maintain several Cowher’s coaches, unlike Bill Cowher, who only retained defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau, who opposed Tomlin’s defensive philosophy, and longstanding running backs coach Dick Hoak from Chuck Noll’s staff. Tomlin did, however, keep longtime running backs coach Dick Hoak.

When Tomlin was hired, the team had just won the Super Bowl the previous season; hence, this was done to preserve the spirit of camaraderie among the players. In 2007, Tomlin’s first year as head coach of the Steelers, the team finished with a record of 10-6 and won the AFC North Division championship. In the first round of the playoffs, the Jacksonville Jaguars prevailed against the Pittsburgh Steelers with a final score of 31-29.

After leading the Pittsburgh Steelers to victory against the Baltimore Ravens in the 2008 American Football Conference Championship Game, Mike Tomlin established himself as the league’s youngest head coach. His squad ended up winning the Super Bowl in the end. He became the third African-American coach to take a club to the Super Bowl, following in the footsteps of Lovie Smith of Chicago and Tony Dungy of Indianapolis, the two opposing coaches in Super Bowl XLI.

On July 13, 2010, Tomlin and the Steelers agreed to extend his three-year contract by one year. In 2010, under his leadership, the Steelers had a record of 12-4 and qualified for the Super Bowl for the second time in the last three seasons. In Super Bowl XLV, the Pittsburgh Steelers were defeated by the Green Bay Packers by a score of 31-25.

On November 13, 2011, Tomlin earned his 50th victory as the head coach of the Steelers by leading them to a 24-17 win against the Cincinnati Bengals. Tomlin was the fourth head coach in the Steelers’ 16-year history to achieve this accomplishment, making him the fourth head coach overall. On July 24, 2012, Tomlin received word that his contract would be extended by three years through the 2016 campaign.
