Neal Brennan Bio, Life and Career:

Neal Brennan is an American comedian, writer, producer, director, and podcaster. He was born on October 19, 1973, in the United States. His most notable achievements include the co-creation and co-writing of the Comedy Central series Chappelle’s Show (2003–2006) with Dave Chappelle, as well as his stand-up comedy special for Netflix titled 3 Mics (2017). Brennan was the 10th and final child to be born into a family of Irish Catholic origin. He was born on October 19, 1973, in Villanova, Pennsylvania, and was the youngest of 10 children. He moved to Wilmette, Illinois, with his family in 1978 after spending his first six years of life in Villanova, Pennsylvania.

Brennan claims that the people on his mother’s side of the family were hilarious and that the same can be said about his five older brothers. He has stated that he realised he was funny and liked comedy when he was about 8 or 9 years old. At that point, he had already been performing material for his classmates in a style that emulated the comedic styles of comedians David Brenner, Richard Lewis, and Jerry Seinfeld. Half Baked was a financial bomb and was met with mostly unfavourable reviews, yet it has now become a beloved film among certain subcultures. In an interview conducted in 2006, Brennan refers to the time of the film’s release as “perhaps the worst year of my life, creatively and personally.” This was the time period in which the picture was being distributed.

Kevin, Brennan’s older brother, went on to become a writer and comedian, and he began performing stand-up comedy while Brennan was still a student in high school. On the weekends, Brennan would go to New York City to see Kevin perform at The Improv, where he would meet comedians like Dave Attell, David Juskow, Ray Romano, and Mike Royce. Kevin’s performances were always hilarious. He mentioned in an interview with Independent Film Channel (IFC) that after seeing his brother perform stand-up comedy, he realised that it was feasible to make a life in comedy.

He came to this realisation after watching his brother perform.  He relocated to New York with the intention of enrolling in the film programme at NYU, but he left the programme after only one year. He got his start working as a doorman at the Boston Comedy Club in Greenwich Village, which is no longer in operation. It was there that he became acquainted with frequent performer Dave Chappelle. After a while, the two became friends, and Brennan would frequently offer Chappelle jokes to perform. While living in New York, Brennan also lived in an apartment that was shared with the comic Jay Mohr.

In 1992, when he was only 18 years old, Brennan gave his first stand-up performance. Prior to that, he had worked as a doorman at the Boston Comedy Club for a period of six months.  In retrospect, he recalled that he “received no laughs,” and as a result, he refrained from performing stand-up comedy for the next five years. In 1992, he contributed articles to the publication The Source. Brennan made the move to Los Angeles in the middle of the 1990s. In 1995, he began working as a writer for the dating show Singled Out, which at the time was hosted by Chris Hardwick and Jenny McCarthy.  After this, writing positions became available on the game show Bzzz! in 1996, on the sketch comedy-variety show All That from 1996 to 1997, and on the adolescent sitcom Kenan & Kel in 1997.
