Pema Chödrön Bio, Life and Career:

Ema Chodron is a Tibetan Buddhist who was born in the United States as Deirdre Blomfield-Brown on July 14, 1936. Her Tibetan name is Padma chos sgron, which translates to “lotus dharma lamp.” She is a follower of Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche as well as an ordained nun and a former Acharya of the Shambhala Buddhism tradition. Chodron is the primary instructor at Gampo Abbey, which is located in Nova Scotia. She is the author of many dozen books and CDs.In the year 1936, Deirdre Blomfield-Brown gave birth to Chodron in the city of New York.

She was raised in a Catholic family. She received her education at Miss Porter’s School in Farmington, Connecticut. Prior to that, she spent her childhood on a farm in New Jersey with her older brother and sister. She graduated from Sarah Lawrence College with a bachelor’s degree in English literature and from the University of California, Berkeley with a master’s degree in primary education.

Both institutions are located in the United States. The first of Chodron’s many travels to London, which spanned a number of years, was in order to begin her education with Lama Chime Rinpoche. While she was in the United States, she attended classes in San Francisco taught by Trungpa Rinpoche.

In the year 1974, she entered the Buddhist convent of Rangjung Rigpe Dorje, the sixteenth Gyalwa Karmapa, and began her training as a novice nun. In the year 1981, she made history in Hong Kong by being the first person from the United States to become a fully ordained bhikku in the Vajrayana lineage. At the beginning of the 1980s, Trungpa appointed Chodron to the position of director of the Boulder Shambhala Center, also known as the Boulder Dharmadhatu.

In 1984, Chodron relocated to Gampo Abbey, which was the first Tibetan Buddhist monastery in North America to accept Western men and women. Three years later, she was appointed as the monastery’s first director. In 1991, Chodron saw the publication of her very first book, titled The Wisdom of No Escape. Then, in the year 1993, she was given the title of Acharya when Trungpa’s son, Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche, acquired leadership of his father’s Shambhala lineage.

This occurred when Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche succeeded Trungpa as the head of the Shambhala lineage. She was diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome in 1994, but throughout the years, her condition has gradually improved. During this time, she made the connection that led to her becoming Dzigar Kongtrul Rinpoche’s student. In that same year, she released her second book, titled “Start Where You Are.” and the book When Things Fall Apart, published in 1996. In the year 2005, the book “No Time to Lose” was released.

This book is a commentary on Shantideva’s Guide to the Bodhisattva’s Way of Life. Within the same calendar year, Chodron joined The Committee of Western Bhikshunis as a member. 2007 was the year that saw the publication of Practicing Peace in Times of War. The Chinese Buddhist Bhikkhuni Association of Taiwan bestowed upon her in the year 2016 the Global Bhikkhuni Award.

This honor was given to her by the association. She said, “I do not feel that I can continue any longer as a representative and senior teacher of Shambhala given the unwise direction in which I feel we are going.” This led to her resignation from her position as Acharya with Shambhala International in the year 2020. Her decision was influenced in part by how the organization dealt with allegations of sexual misconduct.

During the winter months, Chodron leads the time-honored “Yarne” retreat at Gampo Abbey, and during the summer months, she teaches the course “Guide to the Bodhisattva’s Way of Life” in Berkeley. The concept of “sherpa,” sometimes known as “attachment,” is one of the most important aspects of her teaching, and she defines it as the point at which a person becomes entangled in a pattern of negative or self-destructive thoughts and behaviors that they perform on a regular basis.

This is something that can happen, according to Chodron, if anything in the present causes a reaction to something that happened in the past. Chodron tied the knot at the age of 21 and went on to have two children, but by the time she was in her mid-twenties, she was no longer married. After getting a divorce the first time, she remarried and then got a second divorce eight years later.
