Phil Anselmo Bio, Life, and Career:
Philip Hansen Anselmo is an American heavy metal musician who was born on June 30, 1968. He is best known for his work as the lead singer for a number of bands, including Pantera, Down, and Superjoint, amongst other musical ventures. Housecore Records is a that he owns and operates. Anselmo is widely recognized as one of the best frontmen in the history of metal. He is famous for being extremely active and adopting a macho attitude, which became representative of Pantera’s overall aesthetic. At
the beginning of his tenure with the band, Anselmo received a significant amount of inspiration from heavy metal vocalists like Rob Halford, singing in full head voice. On the other hand, he eventually became famous for a harsher style of singing that he had developed. Anselmo is of Danish, Italian, and French origin, and he was born in New Orleans, which is located in the state of Louisiana.
He went to a number of different schools across the states of Louisiana and Texas, the last of which was Grace King High School in the suburb of Metairie in New Orleans, which he left in the middle of his senior year of attendance. Phil, Anselmo’s father, was the owner and operator of a restaurant in Metairie that was called Anselmo’s. The restaurant was shut down after Hurricane Katrina. Anselmo has mentioned in a number of interviews that, when he was younger, he was known as the class clown.
While Anselmo was still a teenager, he was trying to pull a joke on his sister by starting a fire in the house that his parents lived in. As a result of the occurrence, smoke damage was sustained by the majority of the furnishings, and a portion of the house needed to be renovated. When Anselmo was a teenager, he worked on a shrimp boat with his stepfather.
During that time, he claimed to have seen a guy die from the effects of being poisoned by a scorpionfish. In 1981, Anselmo collaborated with friends from the surrounding community to start his first band, which they called Samhain (not to be confused with Glenn Danzig’s band of the same name). Anselmo was responsible for singing and guitar responsibilities in the band.
In 1985, he became a member of the band Rapid Phaze, which would later change their name to Razor White, taking the name of one of the songs that Anselmo had written. Even though they did have some of their own original material, the majority of the time they covered songs by popular rock and metal bands.
Around this time, Anselmo decided to forego his senior year of high school in order to focus on his profession as a musician. After being a member of Razor White for more than a year, he eventually felt dissatisfied with the band’s path and started looking into other opportunities.
Pantera made four albums available through Metal Magic Records; nonetheless, the band did not receive much attention during this time period because it was not signed with a big record company. Terry Glaze, the band’s original singer, was primarily a glam metal vocalist, but he left the band because the members wanted to go in a harsher direction and they were looking for a new frontman.
Anselmo, who was only 19 years old at the time, was officially welcomed into the Pantera lineup in 1987, after a series of meetings. Pantera’s fourth studio album, Power Metal, was recorded in Texas by Anselmo, who later moved to Texas. The album was released in 1988.
The band ditched their glam image and went for a more laid-back appearance with the publication of their album Power Metal. After being turned down “28 times by every major label on the face of the Earth,” Pantera finally was signed to Atco Records in 1989 and released their fifth album, Cowboys from Hell, the following year. This record helped pave the road for the band’s rise to fame and defined a new type of metal known as groove metal.
The band’s debut home video, titled Cowboys from Hell: The Videos and released in 1991, covered a portion of the tour that they were doing to promote their most recent studio album. The tour was taking place at the time. On October 31, 2001, Anselmo married his longtime lover, Stephanie Opal Weinstein. During the same year, the pair formed an acoustic band that they dubbed Southern Isolation and put out an EP with four songs under that name.
As of the year 2011, Anselmo resides in the countryside of Louisiana, and he is in a relationship with Kate Richardson, who is also an employee at his record company, Housecore Records. He rejects the idea of a god.
