Phil Collins Bio, Life, and Career:

Philip David Charles Collins LVO is a well-known English singer, musician, composer, record producer, and actor. He was born on the 30th of January 1951. In addition to having a career as a solo performer, he was the drummer for the rock band Genesis and eventually became the band’s main singer. As a solo artist, Collins had three number-one hits in the UK and seven number singles in the US between the years 1982 and 1990. When his work with Genesis, his work with other artists, and his solo career are added together, he had more songs that peaked in the top 40 in the United States than any other artist throughout the decade of the 1980s.

His singles “In the Air Tonight,” “Despite All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now),” “One More Night,” “Another Day in Paradise,” and “I Wish It Would Rain Down” were among his most commercially successful releases during this time period. Collins, who was born and raised in West London, started playing the drums when he was five years old and completed his training at a drama school. This led to him landing various roles as a child actor, and at the age of 13, he landed his first major role as the Artful Dodger in the West End musical Oliver! After that, he decided to pursue a career in music and joined Genesis in 1970 as the band’s drummer.

After Peter Gabriel left the group in 1975, he was promoted to the lead singer of Genesis. Collins had a successful solo career in the 1980s, first inspired by the breakup of his marriage and his love of soul music. He released the albums Face Value (1981), Hey, I Gotta Be Leaving (1982), No Jacket Needed (1985), and…But Seriously? (1989), all of which were successful (1989). Collins rose to prominence as “one of the most popular pop and adult contemporary vocalists of the ’80s and beyond,” as described by AllMusic.

In addition to this, many of his recordings feature a percussion sound that is easily recognizable due to the presence of gated reverb.  He was the only performer that year to play at both of Live Aid’s events and he did so in 1985. He also picked up where he left off in the acting world, making a cameo in an episode of Miami Vice and then going on to star in the movie Buster (1988). Collins departed Genesis in 1996 in order to concentrate on his solo career, during which he contributed songs to Disney’s Tarzan (1999), for which he was awarded an Academy Award for Best Original Song for “You’ll Be in My Heart.”

In 2007, he made his return to Genesis for the band’s Turn It On Again Tour. Following a five-year hiatus during which he prioritized his time with his family, Collins published his autobiography in 2016 and finished his “Not Dead Yet Tour” in 2019. After that, in 2020, he got back together with Genesis for a second reunion tour, which lasted until March 2022. On the 30th of January, 1951, Philip David Charles Collins was born in Putney Hospital in Wandsworth, which is located in southwest London.

His father, Greville Philip Austin Collins (1907–1972), worked as an insurance agent for London Assurance, and his mother, Winifred June Collins (née Strange, 1913–2011), worked in a toy shop and later as a booking agent at the Barbara Speake Stage School, an independent performing arts school in East Acton. Greville Philip Austin Collins died in 1972, and Winifred June Collins died in 2011. Collins is the youngest of three children; his brother Clive was a well-known cartoonist, while his sister Carole competed as a professional ice skater and followed in her mother’s footsteps as a theatrical agent.

When Collins turned two years old, the family had already relocated twice before finding a permanent home at 453 Hanworth Road in Hounslow, Middlesex. When Collins was fourteen years old, she decided to enroll at Barbara Speake’s school on a full-time basis. He appeared in the film A Hard Day’s Night (1964) as an uncredited extra, and during the scene in which the teens are screaming at the television, he is one of those teenagers.

The film was made by the Beatles.  Later in the year 1964, the musical Oliver! cast Collins in the role of the Artful Dodger for two different runs on the West End.  He was said to be “the best part for a kid in all of London” and received £15 per week for his work in the role.  His time as the Dodger was coming to an end after he had a vocal injury in the middle of a performance and was forced to recite his lines for the remainder of the play. Collins portrayed the title role in the 1967 film Calamity the Cow, which was created by the Children’s Film Foundation.

Collins made the decision to pursue a career in music after having a disagreement with the director of the film she was working on.  His scene in the 1968 film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, in which he was supposed to play one of the youngsters who raid the castle, was ultimately scrapped. Collins tried out for the part of Romeo in the 1968 production of Romeo and Juliet; however, the role ultimately went to Leonard Whiting.  In addition to that, he went around the country teaching people how to do the “crunch” dance, which was made famous by an advertisement for Smith’s crisps.
