Ruth Wilson MBE is a British actress who was born on January 13th, 1982 in the United Kingdom. She is most recognized for her roles as the title character in the film Jane Eyre (2006), Alice Morgan in the BBC psychological crime drama Luther (2010–2013, 2019), Alison Lockhart in the Showtime drama The Affair (2014–2018), and Mrs.

Wilson (2018). She has been playing the part of Marisa Coulter in the BBC/HBO fantasy series His Dark Materials since 2019, and for her performance in this role, she was awarded the BAFTA Cymru Award for Best Actress in 2020. Her filmography includes roles in “The Lone Ranger,” “Saving Mr. Banks,” “I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House,” and “Dark River,” both of which were released in 2013.

Wilson is the daughter of Nigel Wilson, an investment banker, and Mary Metson, who worked as a probation officer before she married Nigel Wilson. Wilson was born in Ashford. Tobias “Toby” Wilson, Samuel “Sam” Wilson, and Matthew Wilson are her older brothers. Samuel “Sam” Wilson is a journalist for the BBC.

She is the grandchild of the novelist and former MI6 officer Alexander Wilson and his third wife, Alison (née McKelvie), whom he bigamously married. She is their granddaughter. Her great-great-grandmother on her father’s side was of Irish descent. Wilson was raised in the Catholic faith and spent his childhood in Shepperton, which is located in Surrey.

After completing the fifth and sixth forms at Esher College, she went on to study at Notre Dame School, which is a private Catholic institution for girls located in Cobham. She began her career in modeling when she was just a youngster. She attended the University of Nottingham, where she majored in History, and during her time there, she was also active in student theater at the Nottingham New Theatre.

She earned her bachelor’s degree in 2003 from Nottingham and her master’s degree in 2005 from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA). Following that, she became a co-founder of Hush Productions. While she was a student at Nottingham, she took part in the television war strategy game Time Commanders, assisting her comrades in combat during the Battle of Pharsalus.

Wilson had one professional movie credit under her belt before landing the part of Jane Eyre. That credit was for the situation comedy Suburban Shootout, in which she co-starred alongside Tom Hiddleston. During the 2006–2007 television season, she filmed the second season of Suburban Shootout, a new Agatha Christie’s Marple mystery for ITV titled “Nemesis,” and Stephen Poliakoff’s BBC television drama Capturing Mary in which she played the younger version of Mary.

Tanya, the character that Wilson played in Gorky’s Philistines in 2007, was on stage at the Royal National Theatre from May through August of that year. She was the host for the 2007 Lilian Baylis Awards ceremony, which took place in June.

Other projects that were completed in 2007 included a guest appearance in the sitcom Freezing as Alison Fennel (which was broadcast on BBC2, 21 February 2008); narration of the documentary The Polish Ambulance Murders (which was broadcast on BBC4, 5 February 2008); and the portrayal of a mentally ill doctor in the dramatized documentary The Doctor Who Hears Voices (which was broadcast on UK Channel 4, 21 April 2008).

In the Donmar Warehouse production of A Streetcar Named Desire that ran from the 23rd of July to the 3rd of October 2009, she played the role of Stella. Wilson played the role of the Village doctor in “No. 313,” which he had in the 2009 TV miniseries version of “The Prisoner,” which made its debut on November 15, 2009 on AMC Television and ITV. She performed the role of “Queenie” in an adaptation of Andrea Levy’s novel Small Island, which first aired in the United Kingdom on BBC1 in December 2009 and then in the United States on PBS in 2010.

Since 2010, she has played the role of Alice Morgan in the British psychological police drama Luther. In the role, she is a research scientist who is also a very intelligent individual who Luther describes as a narcissist. In September of 2012, the creator of the series, Neil Cross, made the announcement that he was in the midst of creating a spin-off of Luther that would center on Wilson’s character; however, as of the year 2018, this has not yet taken place.

Cross made the following statement: “The BBC is really interested in the initiative. The only real question would be how many and how often we would do it, whether it would be a one-off miniseries or a returning miniseries, as well as whether or not it would be a co-production. Wilson’s appearance in Luther’s fourth season was prevented by scheduling conflicts with the filming of The Affair, but she made her comeback for Luther’s fifth season.

Wilson played the title character in Eugene O’Neill’s Anna Christie at the Donmar Warehouse alongside Jude Law from the 4th of August to the 8th of October 2011. Wilson’s “courageous, edgy, and compelling talent” was the subject of an editorial that was published in The Guardian as a direct result of her performance.
