Sarah Jaffe Bio, Life, and Career:

Sarah L. Jaffe is a journalist who focuses on labor issues. Necessary Trouble: Americans in Revolt (2016) and Work Won’t Love You Back: How Devotion to Our Jobs Keeps Us Exploited, Exhausted, and Alone are two books that she has written and published (2021). Columnist for The Progressive and New Labor Forum, Jaffe’s writing has also been published in publications such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Atlantic, The Guardian, and The New Republic. Jaffe is a member of the American Federation of Teachers. In addition to that, she is one of the hosts of the podcast known as Belabored. 1980 was the year of Jaffe’s birth. She received her undergraduate degree in English from Loyola University New Orleans, where she had previously attended.

She attended Temple University in Philadelphia and received her master’s degree in journalism from there. After graduating college during the recession of the early 2000s, Jaffe ended up working as a waitress and in retail jobs for a combined total of five years. Her original career goals included becoming a novelist or screenwriter. Her foray into the writing world began when she started a blog devoted to feminist issues. Later, she became interested in reporting on labor issues.  Journalist and activist Kim Kelly calls Jaffe “one of labor’s leading voices and guiding lights,” and she refers to him as “one of labor’s leading voices.”

This is expected of teachers because they love their students.  In addition, she suggests that it suppresses criticism because low-paid (or unpaid) workers in their “dream job” in the non-profit world, internships, or academia are seen as ungrateful if they question the power arrangement in their work and who it serves. She says, “We’re supposed to work for the love of it and how dare we ask questions about the way our work is making other people rich while we struggle to pay rent.”

Retta Reviewers were effusive in their praise for the book. Retta claims that the publication of the book in January 2021, during the economic disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, means that it “is arriving at the perfect time.” Tim Adams, writing for The Guardian, shared a similar sentiment, calling it “an extremely timely analysis.”  The publication Publishers Weekly referred to it as “an important and convincing call for returning to a more pragmatic view of work.”

Jaffe, along with Michelle Chen, is one of the hosts of the podcast Belabored for the publication Dissent. Prior to working with Laura Flanders, she held the position of web director at GRITtv. Jaffe was a member of the Poynter Fellows program at Yale University in 2019. She has also worked as a fellow for the Type Media Center. Necessary Trouble: Americans in Revolt was written by Jaffe and published by Nation Books in the year 2016. This article examines the activism that has taken place in the United States over the past decade, beginning with Occupy Wall Street and moving on to Black Lives Matter and the Tea Party movement.

Jaffe contends that these demonstrations ought to be understood as stemming from economic discontent, albeit with a critical eye toward the figure of the white male worker, which economic populism has historically centered. Jaffe’s argument is presented in the following way: Necessary Trouble “focuses on those left out of the struggle between traditional populism and corporations, including women and people of color, and her book finds the thread of economic injustice in every tapestry it weaves,” wrote Vann C. Newkirk II in his review of the book for The New York Times. Work Won’t Love You Back: How Devotion to Our Jobs Keeps Us Exploited, Exhausted, and Alone with Bold Type Books was Jaffe’s second book, which was published in the year 2020 by Bold Type Books.

It provided a description of the lives of ten people who held a wide variety of jobs and used criticisms of emotional labor to account for the increasing difficulty of jobs that are not accompanied by increases in financial compensation. In a review for Bitch magazine, Mary Retta writes that Jaffe “examines and critiques the ‘labor of love’ ideology that insists that if we’re passionate about work, we’re not working at all.” Jaffe does this by “examining and critiquing the ideology that insists if we’re passionate about work, we’re not working at all.”  According to Jaffe’s argument, this line of thinking subjects workers such as teachers, who he refers to as “the ultimate laborers of love,” to unreasonable working conditions. These conditions include low pay and long hours.

Ultimately, Retta believes that “one of Jaffe’s most interesting points is made in her discussion of our unrequited love for labor has perverted our ability to love other human beings,” with work absorbing more and more effective investment and leaving little room for personal relationships. Jaffe urges readers to resist this trend, writing, “What I believe, and want you to believe too is that love is too big and beautiful and grand and messy and human a thing to be wasted on a team.”
