Serena Ryder Bio, Life, and Career:

Serena Lauren Ryder is a Canadian singer-songwriter. She was born on December 8, 1982, in Ontario. She was born in Toronto, although she spent her childhood in the town of Millbrook in Ontario. Ryder has released a total of eight studio albums since she initially rose to national prominence in 2007 with the release of the ballad “Weak in the Knees.” Serena Lauren Ryder is a member of a musically talented family. Her mother, Barbara Ryder, and her father, Glen Sorzano, are her parents.

Her biological father was a musician from Trinidad who settled in Canada in the early sixties after having emigrated there. Her uncle, the part-Ojibwe (Temagami First Nation) singer-songwriter Bob Carpenter, collaborated with producer Brian Ahern and vocalist Emmylou Harris to create the unreleased album Quiet Passage (1974), which has since become a folk-rock cult classic. This album was recorded in 1974. Ryder, the youngest of three children, was raised by Barbara and her second husband, Andrew McKibbon, just outside Peterborough, in Millbrook, Ontario.

As she was growing up, Ryder would listen to old recordings from her parents’ collection, including ones by the Beatles and Leonard Cohen. Ryder began performing in Royal Canadian Legion halls and motor hotel lobbies at the age of eight. At the age of thirteen, she started learning to play the guitar after her stepfather gave her an instrument of that kind. After that, there were attempts made to write songs. By the age of fifteen, she was performing in coffeehouses and legion halls with her piano teacher, playing traditional and folk music.

Ryder moved away from her family when she was 17 years old and resided in Peterborough, Ontario. There, she became a part of a community of artists when she was enrolled in the Integrated Arts Program at the Peterborough Collegiate and Vocational School. At the beginning of 1998, Damon de Szegheo, a record producer and the owner of the independent record label Mime Radio approached her with the idea of recording. Mime Radio is situated in Peterborough. de Szegheo first became aware of her when she was singing in the background of a local stage production of Gone with the Wind while the set was being changed.

The result of their sessions was a promotional cassette titled Serena, which had a run of only one hundred copies, and her debut full-length CD, titled Falling Out, which was published in December of 1999. During that time period, de Szegheo was also responsible for organizing live concert appearances for Ryder. These concerts featured a wide variety of local and touring acts, such as the band Thousand Foot Krutch, Three Days Grace (then known as Groundswell), and Craig Cardiff. Kellie Bonnici became Ryder’s manager at a later time.

After being impressed by Ryder’s performance at the 2001 Peterborough Folk Festival, when she was presented with the Festival’s first “Emerging Artist” award, Bonnici called Ryder with an offer to assist her. Ryder was the recipient of this award. Because of this award, Ryder and Bonnici were able to participate in a conference for regional music festivals and establish some preliminary connections. Live in the Market Hall and A Day in the Studio, two albums that Ryder and Bonnici collaborated on and released in 2002.

The owner of the Black Sheep Inn in Wakefield, Quebec, Paul Symes, called the producer of the CBC Radio program Bandwidth, Bill Stunt, and left a voice mail of the live show with him while Ryder was performing there for the first time. As a result of this, Stunt and Symes decided to invite Ryder to the Black Sheep Inn to give a concert that would be recorded by CBC Bandwidth. After some time, Serena Ryder published the tape as a live EP titled Serena Ryder Live. Ryder released her first studio album with a big label in 2005 under the title Unlikely Emergency.

The CD was recorded with Workman and two other players. With the success of the record, it was recommended to Ryder that she cover songs written by other Canadian musicians. Ryder’s performance at the 2005 Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame press conference earned her the opportunity to sing at the event.
