Susan Gerbic Bio, Life, and Career:

Susan Gerbic is a well-known American studio photographer who was born in 1962. She is most known for exposing persons who claim to be mediums, which led to her becoming known as a scientific skepticism crusader. She is a fellow of the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry in addition to being a columnist for the Skeptical Inquirer which is a publication of the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry. Gerbic was the youngest of three children and was raised Southern Baptist in Salinas, California. He is the only survivor of the family. Her father’s parents hailed from Slovenia, and he was born in 1918 in Euclid, Ohio.

He participated in the military during World War II, and then after the war, he moved to Salinas, California. Gerbic received his education in Salinas, California, where he attended Freemont Elementary School, El Sausal Junior High School, and Alisal High School, from which he graduated in 1980. During her junior year, she made the decision to no longer believe in God. After graduating from high school, she attended Hartnell College, which is located in Salinas as well, where she earned an associate’s degree in general studies in 1993 and an associate’s degree in history in 1998, all while working and raising two kids. She attended California State University, Monterey Bay, and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social and Behavioral Studies in the year 2002.

Gerbic began working at the Lifetouch photo studio located inside JC Penney at the Northridge Mall in Salinas in 1982, and he remained there for the next 34 years, rising up the ranks to become a manager. In 2016, when the recording studio was shut down, she went into retirement. When Gerbic was 33, she picked up a copy of Skeptical Inquirer for the very first time, and in the year 2000, she went to the Skeptic’s Toolbox program in Eugene, Oregon. In 2009, she traveled to Mexico on a cruise called “Amazing Adventure” which was organized by the Canadian stage magician and skeptic James Randi.

The New York Times reported that Randi used a MacArthur grant to support “annual ship excursions crowded with doubters. A significant portion of Gerbic’s activity has involved the organization of sting operations targeting individuals who assert that they are mediums. She, along with a group of other volunteers who called themselves “Guerrilla Skeptics,” would create false Facebook pages and then visit mediums, where they would claim to be getting communications from the profiles’ subjects. The meeting would be recorded, and the evidence would be uploaded to Gerbic’s team’s website.

Guerrilla Skepticism on Wikipedia (GSoW) is a group of editors that was started in 2010 by Gerbic. Their mission is to produce and improve Wikipedia pages in a way that reflects skepticism toward scientific claims. In an interview that took place in February 2019 with Gerbic, the New York Times Magazine stated that the GSoW had 144 editors who had contributed to the creation of roughly 900 pages on Wikipedia. In 1983, Gerbic tied the knot with Robert Forsyth. Their marriage lasted till 2002, during which time they welcomed two sons into the world. Gerbic had been in a relationship with the mentalist Mark Edward as of the month of August 2018.
