The Edge Bio, Life, and Career:

David Howell Evans, better known as the Edge or simply Edge, is an English-born Irish musician, singer, and composer. He was born on August 8, 1961, and goes by the name David Howell Evans. His work with the rock band U2 as lead guitarist, keyboards, and backing vocalist has brought him widespread renown. Since the band’s beginning, he has been a part of it and has contributed to 14 studio albums, as well as released one record under his own name.

His subtle style of guitar playing, which is a characteristic of U2’s music, is defined by chiming timbres, use of rhythmic delay, drone notes, harmonics, and heavy use of effects units. David Howell Evans was the second child of Welsh parents. Both of his parents were originally from the town of Llanelli. His father was an engineer who initially worked for the local energy board and then worked for the electronics company Plessey. His father passed away while his son was a little boy. Evans is related to the actress Juliet Aubrey through his older brother, Richard (commonly referred to as Dik), and his younger sister, Gillian. Evans is also a member of the Aubrey family.

Chadwell Heath was the family’s first permanent residence. Around the year 1962, Garvin was presented with an opportunity for advancement, which resulted in the family moving to Dublin. During the time that he spent as a child in Dublin, Evans spoke with two distinct accents. When he was at home, he used a Welsh accent, but when he was outside, he used an Irish accent. Later on, he expressed his thoughts on the matter, saying, “The purpose for this dual identity was primarily to be understood by my peers, but also to be accepted.”

He subsequently remarked that there were times of frustration for him while growing up in a Catholic country, and he speculated that this may have had a role in the creation of his musical style. In 1976, when the Evans brothers were students at Mount Temple Comprehensive School in Dublin, they responded to an advertisement posted on the school’s noticeboard by another student, Larry Mullen Jr., who was looking for musicians to form a new band with him and invited the Evans brothers to attend a meeting in response to the advertisement.

Paul “Bono” Hewson and Adam Clayton were two of the many students who were among the group of students who responded to the note. The band went through a series of lineup changes before finally settling on the name U2 in March of 1978. Early on in the band’s career, members of the Lypton Village surrealist street gang, which Bono was a part of, bestowed the nickname “the Edge” onto Evans.
