Anna Lembke Bio, Life, and Career:

American psychiatrist Anna Lembke, who was born on November 27, 1967, is the director of the Stanford Addiction Medicine Dual Diagnosis Clinic at Stanford University. According to Dr. Anna Lembke, the medical head of Stanford’s addiction medicine department, making the medication accessible over the counter would also free users from the need to administer it under the protection of Good Samaritan law.

The legal protection provided by these statutes to those who assist the wounded or sick is limited. According to Dr. Anna Lembke, medical director of addiction medicine at Stanford University, “this is a strong statement, a huge moment, coming from the president and the vice president, to highlight that pregnancy is the golden chance to assist women to enter into recovery.”

According to the Times, a report on the program, which would employ the Departments of Justice, Veterans Affairs, and Indian Health Service to increase access to buprenorphine and methadone, was due to be released by the White House on Friday.

For pregnant women with opioid misuse problems, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) would instruct judges to consider opioid replacement medicines in sentencing regimens. According to the Times, addiction specialists would try to increase access to the drug in areas with high rates of addiction.

As part of its program expansion, SAMHSA would also hire an associate administrator specifically for women’s services and create guidelines for peer recovery support experts to meet national certification requirements. The organization will also keep track of how many obstetricians and midwives have buprenorphine prescription authorization.

“All of that would be meaningless if it were produced over the counter, and the typical person could purchase it without a prescription and without having to take legal precautions to administer it,” she added.

The FDA said that naloxone sold over the counter won’t take supplies away from hospitals and community-based naloxone distribution programs. She is the author of Drug Dealer, MD: How Doctors Were Duped, Patients Got Hooked, and Why It’s So Hard to Stop and an expert on the American opioid crisis. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 107,600 Americans died from drug overdoses in 2017, the greatest yearly death toll on record. Despite several governments’ attempts to increase naloxone availability, obstacles still exist.

Due to the stigma associated with addiction, some patients can be reluctant to approach a pharmacist for medicine. According to the Association of American Medical Colleges, more than 21 million Americans struggle with addiction, yet only 11% of them get the necessary care. Additionally, some pharmacists can decline to write the prescription entirely because they are unaware that the medicine is subject to a standing order in their jurisdiction.

After the drug showed on their health insurance bill and the life insurance provider thought they were in danger of an overdose, Hadland said that he had also seen patients having their life insurance coverage refused. The government singled out two medications that would be eligible for over-the-counter use: up to 2 milligrams of Evizo, a single-use auto-injectable from Kaleo, and up to 4 milligrams of Narcan, a nasal spray from Emergent BioSolutions.

According to the agency, the fact that these goods don’t need extra materials or special medical expertise makes them simple to use. Most of them included the potent synthetic opioid fentanyl. Naloxone self-administration has reportedly avoided over 20,000 overdose fatalities between 1999 and 2020, according to the FDA.

The FDA’s letter outlines a process for product approval and requests further details from pharmaceutical companies about how the medicine will be marketed. According to Barnett, over-the-counter naloxone may start appearing on pharmacy shelves as early as next year, but it would still need to be submitted to the FDA for evaluation and approval.

The opioid overdose antidote naloxone is being pushed by the Food and Drug Administration for over-the-counter licensure. Naloxone is only available with a prescription, although several states have developed ways to make it more accessible. For instance, consumers may ask a pharmacist for naloxone via so-called standing orders.

According to Dr. Scott Hadland, an addiction expert at Mass General for Children in Boston, making the medicine accessible without a prescription, dispels stigma. It would be available for sale both online and in-store via self-checkout.

According to Dr. Michael Barnett, an associate professor of health policy and management at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, there has been a significant effort by advocacy organizations in recent years to make the medication more widely accessible.

The FDA “highly urges” naloxone manufacturers to get in touch with them “as soon as possible” to start a conversation about a potential transfer from prescription to over-the-counter, the organization said in a notice posted online on Tuesday.

Experts claim that this action would eliminate obstacles to getting access to the life-saving drug, which, when administered in time, may reverse the symptoms of an opioid overdose. Two dosage forms of the medication, a nasal spray, and an autoinjector may be suitable for over-the-counter usage, according to the FDA. Dopamine Nation: Finding Balance in the Age of Indulgence, her most recent book, and a New York Times bestseller, was published in August 2021.

Lembke is a professor and the medical director of addiction medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine. She also serves as Chief of the Stanford Addiction Medicine Dual Diagnosis Clinic and Program Director of the Stanford Addiction Medicine Fellowship. Supporting patients with drug use disorders, behavioral addictions, and co-occurring mental problems is the goal of Stanford’s Dual Diagnosis Clinic.

Lembke visited the country and gave lawmakers expert evidence while writing the popular scientific book Drug Dealer, MD. She has also spoken at TEDx Stanford on the opioid crisis and pain management. Lembke has researched addiction in regard to drugs and alcohol as well as other substances, but she has a particular interest in addictions to cell phones and other technological devices.

However, neither the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Diseases nor the International Classification of Diseases presently classifies smartphone and technology “addictions” as legitimate clinical disorders. Despite this, Lembke contends that cell phones may worsen the issues associated with other addiction behaviors by increasing availability and social contagion in addition to being addictive on their own. Lembke made the claim that “social media is a narcotic” that abuses the brain’s ostensible evolutionary need for interpersonal connection in the 2020 Netflix docudrama The Social Dilemma.

The children of Lembke made an appearance in the movie as well, and the family expressed their opinion that most people vastly underestimate their screen time.  Lembke attended Yale University as an undergrad, earning a B.A. in humanities in 1989. She received her M.D. from Stanford University School of Medicine in 1995 and finished her psychiatric residency there as well in 1998. She completed an internship in adult psychiatry and addiction at the Alameda County Highland Hospital. She earned her board certification in 2003. Lembke had an appearance in The Social Dilemma documentary on Netflix in 2020.
