New York City is where Jewish families of Romanian Jewish descent gave birth to Ari David Shaffir. His family is Jewish. His father managed to escape death during the Holocaust. The family followed more traditional Jewish practices up until the time Ari was nine years old when they moved to Maryland and Ari’s father converted the family to Orthodox Jewish beliefs. He started working at Arlington National Cemetery when he was 16 years old.
Rockville, Maryland was where Shaffir completed his secondary education. After that, he attended Yeshiva University in New York City for a total of two years of schooling. prior to transferring to the University of Maryland, from which he received his bachelor’s degree in English literature in the year 1999. Shaffer claims that in 1995, while he was competing for the University on the NCAA golf team, he was the lowest-ranked athlete in the NCAA.
When Shaffir was in his early twenties, he attended an open mic night at a “sports comedy place in Northern Virginia.” This was his very first and only time performing stand-up comedy on stage before moving to Los Angeles. After completing his studies at the university, Shaffir relocated to Los Angeles in the hopes of increasing his chances of becoming successful as a stand-up comedian.
He started working at The Comedy Store by answering phones, which led to positions in the cover booth and “the door.” After four and a half years, the owner Mitzi Shore made him a paid regular at the club. Some of his earliest inspirations in the field of comedy came from watching stand-up comedians on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and other showcase comedy shows on television when he was a child. He names Bill Burr as his favorite comedic performer who is still alive.
In 2012, he moved his residence between the two coasts, establishing homes in both New York City and Los Angeles. He did this in the hopes of advancing his stand-up comedy career by increasing the number of sets he performed each week at the various comedy clubs in New York City. In 2015, he moved his residence to New York City.
It was through the online video series “The Amazing Racist” that Shaffir was first introduced to a more general audience. In the late 2000s, he began working as an opening act for Joe Rogan and began touring with Rogan and other comedians Joey Diaz, Duncan Trussell, Tom Segura, Brian Redban, and Eddie Bravo. Joe Rogan was one of his mentors. As part of The Nasty Show, he made an appearance at the Montreal Comedy Festival in the year 2009. The following year, he created, produced, and hosted the monthly live show This Is Not Happening, with Eric Abrams.
This Is Not Happening is a stand-up comedy show that features a number of comedians telling true-life stories centered around a theme. The show was initially released as a web series in 2013, and it made its network television debut on Comedy Central in January 2015. It went on to become a staple at comedy festivals. After selling his third special, Double Negative, to Netflix rather than Comedy Central in 2017, he decided to step down from his roles as producer and host of the show. Roy Wood Jr. took over as host after he stepped down.
It wasn’t until the third episode of the Joe Rogan Experience in 2010 that Shaffir made his first of what would be 44 appearances on the show. Skeptic Tank was Shaffir’s first podcast, which he launched in 2011. On the majority of episodes, Shaffir will select a topic that his guests, who are typically other comedians, can speak authoritatively about.
