Catie Lazarus Bio, Life, and Career:

Catherine Simone Avnet Lazarus was an American writer, comedian, and talk show host. She was born on April 26, 1976, and passed away on December 13, 2020. At the ECNY Awards, Lazarus was recognized as the “Best Comedy Writer,” and he was also included in the list of New York’s “Top 100 New Yorkers.” Lewis Black referred to her as “more brilliant than she’ll ever know,” and Theater Mania referred to her as a “comedy darling.”  Lazarus is most well-known for her work as the creator and host of the monthly comedy show and podcast titled Employee of the Month.

This show was filmed live at Joe’s Pub in New York City and featured interviews with famous people discussing their careers. The New York Times referred to the program as “beloved,” and BlackBook described it as both “hilarious” and “ambitious.” Lazarus, who was born in the District of Columbia, received his education at Wesleyan University. After receiving an impromptu improv lesson from Tina Fey at an Empower Program conference in Washington, D.C., Lazarus decided to abandon her doctoral studies and pursue a career in comedy writing instead.

Three months later, Lazarus gave her debut performance at Stand Up New York, where she went on to take first place in a competition. After that, she triumphed in a second stand-up comedy competition held at the Laugh Factory. She shared a story during her performances at The Moth, The Rejection Show at The Bell House, on Risk!, at Story Collider, and the Asscat event hosted by the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater.

The first article she ever wrote was a parody of the wedding section of The New York Times. Vitamin W, the creator of the animated pilot MYC, said that it provided “more than a few good laughs. In 2004, she conceived of and has been hosting “Stand for Peace,” a comedy benefit for Seeds of Peace that has become an annual event.  After that, she went on to produce and host the comedy variety show “The Chosen One,” which was nominated for an ECNY award and held at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater for Heeb Magazine back when she was editing the Kvetch section of the magazine.

Lazarus was chosen by the booker of New York’s Comix, which had opened in 2006, to host the first alternative comedy showcase, which featured younger talent and alternative comedy. Fresh Meat was first published at Comix Weekly for a period of three years before moving to Ars Nova.  She began hosting “on the Couch” for Tango Magazine in the year 2007. For The Daily Beast, Lazarus penned an article about the interview that her late godfather, Lenny Ross, had with Mike Wallace.

She was a descendant of the Lazarus family, which established the first major department store chain and successfully lobbied President Franklin D. Roosevelt to move the Thanksgiving holiday to a different date.  Her great-great-great-great-grandfather on her father’s side, Simon Lazarus, was the President of F. & R. Lazarus, which was the first company to have employee commissions, price tags, and escalators. Her paternal grandfather, Lester Avnet, served as the CEO of Avnet Inc., and her maternal uncle, Jon Avnet, is active in the film industry. Her brother, Ned Lazarus, was a co-founder of the Co-Existence Center for Seeds of Peace, and her father, Simon Lazarus III, was a policy adviser to President Jimmy Carter.  Her father was a member of the Lazarus family.
