Dan Warthen Bio, Life and Career:

Daniel Dean Warthen, who was born in the United States on December 1, 1952, is a former major league baseball player and currently serves as a coach with the Texas Rangers. Between the years 1975 and 1978, he was a left-handed pitcher for three different Major League Baseball (MLB) teams: the Montreal Expos, the Philadelphia Phillies, and the Houston Astros.

Warthen is a Jew and was born in Omaha, which is located in Nebraska. He received his high school diploma from Omaha North High School in Omaha in 1971. While there, he excelled in the sports of football (high school All-American quarterback, tight end, and linebacker), as well as baseball (outstanding player). He was one of the two people who shared the B’nai B’rith Award in 1971. He was honored with entry into the Omaha Public Schools Athletic Hall of Fame that same year (2018).

In the second round of the 1971 Major League Baseball Draft, Warthen was selected by the Montreal Expos to join their organization. He made his debut in the Northern League in 1971 with the Watertown Expos, where he posted a record of 9–3 with a 3.96 earned run average, led the league with 10 complete games, and finished in second place in the league for wins.

On May 18, 1975, when he was 22 years old, he made his debut in the Major Leagues of Baseball with the Expos by pitching an inning against the Cincinnati Reds in which there were no runs scored. The 1975 season was Warthen’s debut year, and he finished the year with an 8–6 record, three saves, and a 3.11 ERA in 167.2 innings over the course of 40 games (18 starts). Additionally, he was third in the National League in hits per nine innings pitched (6.978) and fourth in strikeouts per nine innings pitched (6.871).

Warthen pitched in the major leagues for four seasons, seeing time with Montreal, Philadelphia, and Houston respectively. He concluded his career in the major leagues with a win–loss record of 12–21 and an earned run average of 4.31. Warthen began his career as a coach in 1981 with the Pittsburgh Pirates. After that, he coached in the minor league organizations of the San Diego Padres and the Philadelphia Phillies.

Warthen worked as the pitching coach for the Detroit Tigers (1999–2002), the San Diego Padres (1996–1997), and the Seattle Mariners (1992). In addition, he was the bullpen coach for the Mariners in 1991. Between the years 2003 and 2005, he worked as the pitching coach for the Triple-A Norfolk Tides.

Between the years 2006 and 2007, Warthen worked for the Los Angeles Dodgers as the bullpen coach under the direction of manager Grady Little. Warthen was promoted to the position of pitching coach for the New York Mets on June 17, 2008, succeeding Rick Peterson in that role. During the offseason leading up to the 2012 season, there were reports circulating that Warthen might not return due to the staff changes.

However, he did return, and he did so alongside the hitting coach at the time, Dave Hudgens. In 2014, while having a talk with an Asian-American interpreter in the clubhouse, Warthen referred to the interpreter as a “Chinaman.” After some time passed, he made an apology.

On October 3, 2017, the Mets decided to let Warthen go from his position as a coach for the team, however, the club did offer him another position inside the organization, which he turned down.

The Texas Rangers announced on November 6, 2017, that they had hired Warthen to serve as an assistant pitching coach for the team.
