Daniel O. Griffin Bio, Life, and Career:

Daniel O’Connell Griffin is a specialist in infectious diseases who was born in the United States on July 15, 1967. He currently serves as the head of the charitable organization known as “Parasites Without Borders.” Griffin, who is also the co-director of the Life Science podcast network Microbe.TVdelivers a weekly COVID Clinical Update as part of the series of podcasts known as This Week in Virology (TWiV). Griffin is a co-author of the textbook “Parasitic Diseases,” which is currently in its seventh edition (2019) and is sold in more than one hundred countries. 2017 marked the year that he released the research paper titled “Human B1 cells in the umbilical cord and adult peripheral blood express the unique phenotypic CD20+CD27+CD43+CD70.” This study was published in the Journal of Experimental Medicine.

In addition to his roles as Infectious Disease Clinician Chief for Pro Health Care and Senior Fellow in Infectious Disease at United Health Group, he is also an Instructor in Clinical Medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. In 1989, Griffin received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy from the University of Colorado in Boulder. After graduating from the New York University School of Medicine with a Doctor of Medicine degree, he went on to do his residency in internal medicine at the University of Utah.  In 2012, he graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Molecular Medicine from the Elmezzi Graduate School of Molecular Medicine in Manhasset, New York.  In the year 2014, he graduated from the infectious diseases fellowship that was offered by North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System-Hofstra University in Manhasset.

Griffin’s work involves looking into the possibility that human B1 cells and natural antibodies have a role in the progression of HIV-associated cancers.  HIV and tropical medicine are two of his primary research interests.  His research interests span a wide range, including investigations into infectious diseases and immunology, as well as molecular medicine and tropical medicine.  As of the year 2021, the primary topics of interest in his research were HIV-1, stem cell latency, stem cell gene therapy utilizing retroviral vectors, and COVID-19. Griffin has worked as a volunteer with the non-profit Foundation for International Medical Relief of Children, where one of his responsibilities included leading required health education seminars for the organization’s workers.
