David Choe Bio, Life, and Career:

David Choe is an American artist, musician, and podcast host who was born on April 21, 1976, in Los Angeles. He has also previously worked as a journalist. The art of Choe can be found being utilized in a wide variety of urban culture and entertainment settings. His work has appeared in publications such as Hustler, Ray Gun, and Vice, both as illustration and writing. He maintains a partnership with the Asian pop culture store/cum magazine Giant Robot. This association is ongoing. He once had an exhibition of his paintings at the Melrose Avenue location of the Double Rainbow ice cream restaurant. His figurative paintings are characterized by a raw, frenzied manner that he has labeled “dirty style.” These paintings address themes of desire, humiliation, and exaltation.

Choe was born in the city of Los Angeles, in the state of California. His parents are second-generation Christians who emigrated from South Korea. His formative years were spent in the Koreatown neighborhood of Los Angeles. Since he was in his teens, he has been decorating the walls of the streets with spray paint. He was a student at the California College of the Arts for a short time.  Slow Jams was the title of a graphic novel that Choe self-published in 1996. He claims to have manufactured only 200 copies of the book and gave them out at Comic-Con in 1998 in the hopes of attracting the notice of a publisher. In 1999, he applied for the Xeric Grant with the book Slow Jams and was awarded $5,000. With this money, he was able to independently print a second, extended edition of 1,000 copies, which was released in 1999 with a cover price of $4.

Since 2008, Choe has donated a significant number of his works to charitable organizations and has worked in partnership with foundations to support the work they do in their respective communities. These efforts have included fundraising for Haiti with Yle Haiti, a foundation founded by Wyclef Jean; painting with the children of The LID Haiti Foundation, and painting with the children of South Central Los Angeles at APCH.  A confrontation with a law enforcement official apparently led to Choe’s arrest in Japan in the early 2000s. At the time, Choe was in the country to participate in an art exhibition. Depending on the source, the year 2003 or 2005 is mentioned, and it is mentioned that Choe served between two and three months in jail.

His autobiographical documentary, titled Dirty Hands: The Art and Crimes of David Choe, was released in 2008 and was co-directed by Harry Kim. Both Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss and the founders of Facebook commissioned him to create murals for their own spaces. Following a number of successful solo exhibitions in San Jose and San Francisco, he was presented with the opportunity to mount a solo show at the Santa Rosa Museum of Contemporary Art in the year 2005. In 2007, he had his first New York solo exhibition titled “Gardeners of Eden” at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery in Chelsea. The following year, in 2008, he had his first solo exhibition in the United Kingdom titled “Murderous Heart” simultaneously in both the London and Newcastle locations of Lazarides Gallery. Choe was recruited by Vice magazine to write for the publication after Gavin McInnes and Shane Smith approached him about his artwork and expressed interest in publishing it.

Choe and Harry Kim were recorded hitchhiking and freight hopping from Los Angeles to Miami and Tijuana to Alaska for an internet series called Thumbs Up! with Vice, which has three seasons. After that, they hitchhiked across China from Beijing to Shenzhen and the gambling center of Macau.  A fourth season was released on Snapchat and Instagram. In this season, Choe and Kim go on an adventure that takes them from San Francisco to New York.  DVDASA is an online lifestyle and entertainment podcast that Choe began co-hosting with adult film star Asa Akira in 2013. Choe described an incident in which he sexually attacked a masseuse in a podcast that was published in March 2014. After some time had passed, he issued a statement to emphasise that the story he had related was a work of fiction and that it ought to be regarded as an expansion of his artistic practice.

In addition, he has garnered acclaim for his watercolor paintings, which were featured in a one-man show of his work held in 2013 at the Museo Universitario del Chopo in Mexico City. He reappeared in 2017 with a new body of work and an exhibition in Los Angeles that featured strong themes of trauma, self-reflection, and hope for recovery. This was after undergoing lengthy therapy and treatment. In 2005, internet entrepreneur Sean Parker, a longtime fan, asked him to paint graphic sexual murals in the interior of Facebook’s first Silicon Valley office. Two years later, in 2007, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg commissioned him to paint murals for Facebook’s next office that were somewhat more subdued in nature.  In spite of the fact that Choe considered the Facebook business model to be “ridiculous and pointless,” he opted to be compensated for the original Facebook murals in the form of company stock rather than monetary payment. On the eve of Facebook’s initial public offering in 2012, the value of his shares was around $200 million.
