Eckhart Tolle Bio, Life, and Career:

Born Ulrich Leonard Tolle on February 16, 1948, Eckhart Tolle is a spiritual teacher and author who was born in Germany. He is known by his German pronunciation, [khat tl]. His writings include “Guardians of Being,” a picture book, “The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment,” which was published in 1997, and “A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose,” which was published in 2005.

In 1948, Ulrich Leonard Tolle was born in the little town of Lunen, which is located in the Ruhr region of Germany, to the north of Dortmund. It was in 1961 that he made the trip to Spain to live with his father. It was in Spain that he “refused all forms of official education between the ages of 13 and 22, preferring instead to follow his own artistic and philosophical interests.”

When he was 15 years old, he received as a gift five spiritual books written by the German mystic Joseph Anton Schneiderfranken. These works “heavily inspired” him. Tolle moved to England when he was 19 years old and worked as a teacher of German and Spanish in a language institute in London for three years. After completing his studies at the University of London in 1977, he continued his education by enrolling in a postgraduate program at the University of Cambridge.

Tolle started getting questions from his former classmates and friends at Cambridge about his opinions. He first established himself in the field as a therapist and later as a spiritual teacher.  Throughout the course of the subsequent five years, students continued to consult with him. He uprooted his life and relocated to Glastonbury, a town known for its alternative lifestyle.

He relocated to Vancouver in the year 1995. The first book written by Tolle titled The Power of Now was released by Namaste Publishing in the year 1997. In 1999, the book had a substantial reprinting by New World Library, which was done on a big scale. Oprah Winfrey recommended the book “The Power of Now” in the 2000 issue of her magazine O.It debuted on The New York Times Best Seller Advice, Miscellaneous, and Hardcover list in August of 2000, and the book eventually climbed all the way to the top spot two years later.

As of the year 2008, the book had been rendered into 33 languages from its original English form. It has been on the list of the 10 top-selling Paperback Advice & Miscellaneous books for a total of 102 weeks when July 2011 rolled around. Stillness Speaks, his second book, was published in the year 2003. In that year, he made it clear that he had no plans to establish “a major business structure” or an ashram or center of any kind. He also denied ever having such intentions.

He was of the opinion that an organization “may emerge spontaneously” and stated that “one needs to be careful that the organization does not become self-serving.”  In spite of this, his website offers his books in addition to “a dizzying range” of products giving spiritual guidance, and a separate website streams videos of monthly group meditations. A New World was published by Tolle in the year 2005.

In the month of January, Oprah Winfrey chose it to be featured in her book club, which led to a surge in sales. Following the announcement, 3.5 million copies were distributed over the course of the subsequent four weeks. By the end of 2008, it has claimed the top spot on the list of best-selling books published by The New York Times 46 times.

In 2008, Tolle and Winfrey collaborated on the production of a series of webinars, each of which focused on a chapter from one of Tolle’s books and featured talks, silent meditations, and questions from viewers who participated via Skype. The attendance for the third webinar was greater than 11 million people.  By October of 2009, there were a total of 35 million people who had accessed the webinars.

Tolle was recognized as a visionary and important leader by Oprah Winfrey and included on her SuperSoul 100 list in the year 2016. Tolle finally decided to make his home in Vancouver, British Columbia, in 1995, after making multiple trips to the western coast of North America. There, he met the woman who would become his wife, Kim Eng, who is also a spiritual teacher and the founder of the program known as Presence Through Movement. Together, they travel the world teaching retreats and workshops.
