Elizabeth Banks is a well-known American actress and director. She was born Elizabeth Irene Mitchell on February 10, 1974, in the United States. She is most recognized for her roles as Effie Trinket in the film adaptations of The Hunger Games (2012–2015) and Gail Abernathy-McKadden in the film adaptations of the Pitch Perfect franchise (2012–2017). Banks made her debut as a film director with the release of Pitch Perfect 2 (2015), which broke the record for the highest opening-weekend gross ever achieved by a film directed for the first time. In addition, she starred in, directed, wrote the screenplay for, and produced the action comedy picture Charlie’s Angels (2019). Brownstone Productions was established by Banks and her husband, Max Handelman, in October 2002. Brownstone Productions is a film and television production company. Banks made her cinematic debut in the low-budget independent flick Surrender Dorothy (1998).

She has made appearances in the movies Wet Hot American Summer (2001), the Spider-Man films directed by Sam Raimi (2002–2007), Seabiscuit (2003), The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005), Slither (2006), Invincible (2006), Zack and Miri Make a Porno (2008), Role Models (2008), The Next Three Days (2010), Man on a Ledge (2012), What to Expect When You’re Expecting (2012), Movie 43 (2013), The Lego Movie (2014) (2019). Cocaine Bear is an upcoming horror comedy film that she is currently directing. Banks’ performance as a recurring character named Avery Jessup on the NBC comedy 30 Rock resulted in two nominations for the Primetime Emmy Award in the category of Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.

She has recurring parts in the television comedies Scrubs and Modern Family; the latter of these roles helped her gain a nomination for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp (2015) and Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later (2016) both starred Banks (2017). Since 2019, she has been the host of an updated version of the game show Press Your Luck, which originally aired in the 1980s. The current season is the show’s fourth overall. Banks was the oldest of four children to be born to Ann (née Wallace) and Mark P. Mitchell, and he was raised on Brown Street in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. He is the city’s namesake.

Her mother was a teller at a bank, and her father was a manufacturing worker for General Electric. Her father was a veteran of the Vietnam War. She has described herself as having an “Irish, WASP, and Catholic” upbringing. When Banks was younger, he was active in baseball and enjoyed riding horses. When she fractured her leg, she was playing in Little League and she was sliding into third base. After that, she tried out for the role of the lead in the school play, which was her first acting role.

She received her high school diploma from Pittsfield High in 1992 and is currently a participant in the Massachusetts Junior Classical League. She received her education at the University of Pennsylvania, where she was accepted into the Friars Senior Society and a member of the Delta Delta Delta Sorority. Her concentration was in communications, and she also received a degree in theatre arts when she graduated magna cum laude in 1996. In 1998, she graduated with a Master of Fine Arts degree from the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco, California. This institution is located in the state of California. Banks decided to change her name before becoming a member of the Screen Actors Guild since another actress named Elizabeth Mitchell was already a member of the organization under that identity.

She was offered a part in the soap opera Santa Barbara after going through the audition process in New York. Banks finally opted to turn down the opportunity since she was already in the process of paying off the student loans she took out to complete her degree. If she had accepted the job, it would have required her to stop her education at the American Conservatory Theatre. She made her debut as an actress in the 1998 indie film Surrender Dorothy, in which she played the role of Elizabeth Casey. Over the next seven years, she acted in a variety of films, such as Wet Hot American Summer (2001), Swept Away (2002), and Seabiscuit (2003).

In the year 2002, Banks and the guy who would eventually become her husband established their own production company under the name Brownstone Productions. Banks rose to more prominence and received more extensive attention thanks to her performance in the comedy film The 40-Year-Old Virgin, which was released in 2005. Banks played the role of Cherie, a stunning blonde who aspired to be a nightclub singer, in William Inge’s Bus Stop, which was performed at the Williamstown Theatre Festival in August of 2005. Jeffrey Borak stated in his article that the portrayal of Banks was acting “with composure, clarity, and a perceptive understanding of the complexity of Cherie’s situation.

Her performance is cohesively cohesive and stylistically in line with the other performances that are occurring around her.” She made an appearance on the series Stella in 2005, and in May of 2006, she played the part of Dr. Kim Briggs in the season five finale of the NBC sitcom Scrubs. In that episode, she was J.D.’s love interest (Zach Braff). As a recurring guest star, Banks appears in episodes of the sixth, seventh, and eighth seasons of the show. In the 2006 American football drama film Invincible, Banks portrays Mark Wahlberg’s on-screen love interest. The film was directed by Michael Bay. After that, she and her co-star Mark Wahlberg were considered for the prize for “Best Kiss” at the MTV Movie Awards. During the same year, she was offered the lead role in the comedy-horror film Slither, and she accepted.
