Ezra Klein Bio, Life, and Career:

Ezra Klein is an American journalist, political analyst, columnist for The New York Times, and host of the podcast The Ezra Klein Show. He was born on May 10, 1984, in the United States.  He is one of the co-founders of Vox and has previously held the position of editor-at-large for the website. He has been a regular contributor to Bloomberg News and MSNBC, in addition to holding editorial positions at The Washington Post and The American Prospect.  The first edition of his book, titled Why We’re Polarized, was released by Simon & Schuster in January of 2020.

As a blogger, Klein rose to prominence and became well known for his in-depth analysis of a variety of policy issues. This contributed to Klein’s rise to prominence. By the year 2007, Klein’s blog had amassed a sizeable readership, and it was eventually purchased by The American Prospect, where Klein worked as an associate editor.

While working at The Washington Post, Klein managed a branded blog known as Wonkblog. This blog featured the writing of Klein and other reporters on topics related to domestic policy. Klein, along with fellow journalists Matt Yglesias and Melissa Bell, established Vox in 2014. Vox is a website that provides explanations of current events and is owned by Vox Media. Klein is the CEO of Vox Media. Initially, he was the editor-in-chief of the publication, and later, he became the editor-at-large.

Klein also wrote articles for the website, hosted a podcast associated with it called “The Ezra Klein Show,” and served as an executive producer for the Vox series “Explained” which is available on Netflix. Klein made the announcement that he would be leaving Vox in November 2020 in order to take a position as a columnist and podcast host at The New York Times. In the year 2012, Klein was referred to as a “wunderkind in Washington.

Klein received his early education in Irvine, California, within a Jewish family. His mother is an artist, and his father is a professor of mathematics at the University of California, Irvine. His father, Abel Klein, is originally from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and he was born there. Klein went to University High School, but he was a terrible student there and only graduated with a 2.2 grade point average in 2002.

Klein began his academic career at the University of California, Santa Cruz, where he remained for a total of two years before transferring to the University of California, Los Angeles. It was at UC Los Angeles that Klein earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in political science and went on to pursue a career in politics. During his time at UC Santa Cruz, he attempted to land a writing gig with City on a Hill Press but was ultimately unsuccessful.  He claimed that he had never been able to thrive at school, either academically or socially. Klein interned for the Washington Monthly in Washington, District of Columbia, in 2004, after having previously worked on the primary campaign for Howard Dean in Vermont in 2003.

According to Klein, “I think that the media is where I’m happiest and where I can be most effective because it is as effective and important an agent for change as the legislative bodies.”  In the year 2003, he and Markos Moulitsas were two of the earliest bloggers to report from a political convention. More specifically, they covered the convention of the California State Democratic Party. In the year 2006, Klein was one of several authors that Lee Siegel, a writer for The New Republic, criticized under a pseudonym (posting as a sock puppet called sprezzatura). On the 10th of December in 2007, Klein made the decision to move his blog to The American Prospect full-time.

Steve Pearlstein, who has worked as a business columnist for The Washington Post for many years, became aware of Klein because of his prolific blogging. Pearlstein is quoted as saying, “I was blown away by how good he was and how much the kid wrote on a wide variety of topics.” Raju Narisetti, the managing editor, received examples of Klein’s work from the sender, Pearlstein. After hearing from Pearlstein and waiting a few weeks, Washington Post foreign correspondent John Pomfret asked Klein to have lunch with him and financial editor Sandy Sugawara.

Sandy Sugawara was also present. Klein was hired by Narisetti to serve as the Post’s first sole blogger dedicated to writing about politics and economics. He started working for the newspaper on May 18, 2009, as a writer. Klein began contributing columns to Bloomberg View in May 2011, in addition to his work at The Washington Post and MSNBC, which he had been doing since the site’s inception.

Klein made public the news that he would be leaving The Washington Post in January 2014, with the intention of co-founding a new media enterprise with a number of other seasoned journalists. Vox, a website devoted to politics, was ultimately determined to be the new media venture.  When Klein was still employed by The Washington Post, he reportedly “proposed the creation of an independent, explanatory journalism website—with more than three dozen staffers” and an annual budget of more than US$10 million. During the course of the negotiations, neither the publisher of The Post, Katharine Weymouth, nor the new owner, Jeff Bezos, made a counteroffer. Annie Lowrey, who writes about economic policy for The Atlantic, is Klein’s wife. They welcomed their first child in February 2019, and are expecting their second child in the fall of 2021.  Klein is vegan.
