Nia King Bio, Life, and Career:

Nia King is a queer artist-activist, multimedia journalist, podcaster, public speaker, and zine maker. She is of mixed race, having ancestry that includes Black, Lebanese, and Hungarian.  Oakland, in the state of California, is her home. Nia conducts interviews with queer and transgender artists for her podcast titled “We Want the Airwaves.” These interviews focus on the artists’ lives as well as their artwork. The title of her podcast, which was taken from a song by the Ramones, served as a demand for access to the media as well as an insistence on the right of marginalized people to occupy space.

In 2011, King received his degree from Mills College. She was born and raised in Boston, which is located in Massachusetts. King is the author of a number of zines that address a variety of topics, including sexuality, self-reflection, and race. King has stated in the past regarding her artwork, “I want to be an artist for the movement.” The book “Queer and Trans Artists of Color: Stories of Some of Our Lives” that she co-edited is titled after her.  is a publication from 2014 that was co-authored by Jessica Glennon-Zukoff and Terra Mikalson. This collection is based on the first year of the podcasts that she produced, the primary focus of which is on the experiences of people of African descent and Latino descent.

The book contains interviews that Stephen King conducted with the following people: Ryka Aoki, Van Binfa, Micia Mosely, Yosimar Reyes, Kortney Ryan Ziegler, Lovemme Corazón, Fabian Romero, Magnolia Black, Kiam Marcelo Junio, Miss Persia, and Daddie$ Pla$tik, Virgie Tovar, Julio Salgado, Nick Mwaluko, Leah Lakshmi In 2014, this book was included on a list compiled by The Advocate of the 10 Best Transgender Non-Fiction Books of the Year.  In her second book, which is called Queer and Trans Artists of Color, Volume 2, she compiles a series of interviews in which the subjects of sexuality, race, and oppression are discussed. In an interview with the Barnard Center for Research on Women, King explained that she publishes her own work because “my work is not mainstream enough for institutions or organizations to want to resource my work in a meaningful way.” This is one of the reasons why she chooses to publish her own work.

Her objective is to disseminate the experiences of queer and transgender civil rights activists. We Want the Airwaves is a podcast that King hosts as well as produces. On the show, she speaks with queer and trans artists of color such as Suzy X, Kyle Casey Chu, and Gabby Rivera. King is also the host of the show. In a conversation she had with KQED Arts, Nia King revealed that the name of her podcast is “from a song by the Ramones, which is representative of my early exposure to punk rock. A demand for access to the media and an insistence on the right of marginalized people to occupy space are also aspects of this movement.” Nia discusses how self-publishing is more accessible to marginalized authors than traditional publishing in an interview with Christopher Persaud on Ideas on Fire. The interview was conducted by Christopher Persaud. In the curriculum kit for grades 6–12 published by the Brooklyn Historical Society titled Voices of Mixed Heritage: Crossing Borders, Bridging Generations, King’s illustrations can be found throughout the book.
