After that, she created a column and blog titled Planet of the Apes, in which she discussed the theory of evolution.

During this time, she also made a guest appearance at the Science Communication Program at UC Santa Cruz in the capacity of an instructor. Since leaving the Inquirer in 2012 to become a science journalism critic for the Knight Science Journalism Tracker at MIT, where she is still a contributor, Flam “has weathered storms in Greenland, helicoptered into equatorial cloud forests, gotten frost nip at the South Pole, and floated weightless aboard NASA’s astronaut training plane.

She was the author of the Lightning Rod Blog for WHYY FM in Philadelphia, where she wrote on a wide variety of scientific subjects, from 2012 to 2013, during which time she was employed there. Since 2013, she has held the position of “science writer in residence” at Ursinus College, where she also teaches classes on the subject. Between the months of February 1991 and March 1995, Flam was a contributor to the journal Science with regular contributions. Her principal areas of focus were said to be particle physics and cosmology, but she also covered news and events in the fields of astronomy, genetics, and evolution, as well as medicine.

Carnal Knowledge was a regular column written by Flam while he worked as a science journalist for The Philadelphia Inquirer. It lasted from 2005 to 2008 and discussed the development of sex as well as the science behind sexuality. After that, she started a column about evolution that she called Planet of the Apes and it ran in the Inquirer from April 2011 until October 2012, when she resigned from her position there.

She was referred to as “one of the best science journalists/bloggers around” in a review that was conducted by the National Association of Science Writers on one of the articles that is part of this series “the only person that I am aware of who has undertaken the difficult task of teaching the general public about evolution in a daily newspaper, and I applaud them for doing so. Planet of the Apes, which Flam wrote for the Philadelphia Inquirer from 2010 to 2012, earned her the Friend of Darwin award in 2014 from the National Center for Science Education. This award was given to her because Planet of the Apes was “the sole newspaper column dedicated to evolution.
