James Altucher Bio, Life, and Career:

James Altucher is an American hedge fund manager, author, podcaster, and entrepreneur who has started or cofounded over 20 companies. He was born on January 22, 1968, in the United States. He is the author of twenty books and has written for numerous publications, including The Huffington Post, The Financial Times, The Wall Street Journal, and TechCrunch. Born and raised in the New Jersey town of North Brunswick. Altucher received his high school diploma from North Brunswick Township High School in the year 1986. In 1989, Altucher received a bachelor of science degree in computer science from Cornell University. His alma mater was Cornell. Following graduation, Altucher’s first employment was in the information technology department at HBO. III: am was a program that Altucher once hosted on HBO at one point.

In 1998, Altucher parted ways with HBO, sold a firm he had co-founded called Reset Inc. for close to $15 million, and then invested the money he received from the sale in other online businesses. According to what Altucher has said, he started this era with $15 million and lost it all within two years, which prompted him to rethink his approach to both life and business. During this time period, Jim Cramer of TheStreet.com engaged Altucher to write about stocks, and Altucher simultaneously began trading for hedge funds.  Between the years 2002 and 2005, he traded for a number of different hedge funds. Between 2004 and 2006, he managed a fund that invested in other hedge funds.

A few weeks ago, I contributed to one of the books in Seth Godin’s “Domino Project” series by writing a chapter. Mohit Pawar took the initiative to organize it (you can visit Mohit’s blog here), and he recently emailed me a number of questions. It is supposed to be an interview on Mohit’s blog, but I would also like to use it as my new “About Me” section, so I hope he will pardon me for doing that. When I arrived in New York City for the first time in 1994, I had the goal of becoming everything to everyone. I had spent the previous six years writing a variety of books and short tales, all of which remained unpublished despite my best efforts.

There may have been hundreds of short stories that I sent to various literary periodicals. When I sent my novels and short tales to various publishers, journals, and agents, I only received form rejections in return. Now, in the year 1994, anything was open to possibility. New York City was home to the cash. The media was present. It didn’t matter that I was living in a room that was just 10 square feet and picking my clothes out of a trash bag every morning because the internet was just getting started and I knew how to make websites. Only one of a few in the entire city. However, my sister forewarned me that nobody in this place will be my friend. Everyone has their sights set on something.

Altucher established the financial social network known as StockPickr in the year 2006. According to Time Magazine, this website was selected as one of the top 50 best websites of 2007. In 2007, Altucher made a profit of $10 million by selling the company.  In spite of the fact that he had previously referred to Bitcoin as “a fad, or a scam, or a Ponzi scheme, or worse” in 2013, he started giving investment advice on cryptocurrencies in 2017. However, he constructed a store to sell his book, “Choose Yourself,” for Bitcoin in May of 2013, a month before he released it on Amazon.com. Business Insider conducted an interview with him to discuss the reasons he changed his opinion on Bitcoin.  Buddy Media was acquired by Salesforce.com in 2012 for the sum of $745 million, and one of Altucher’s early investments was in the company.

In Tim Ferriss’s book, Tools of Titans, there is a chapter written by Altucher in which he offers advice. A reader who enjoyed reading several of my columns purchased the domain name jamesaltucher.com and presented it to me as a present for my birthday about four or five years ago. It came as a complete and utter shock to me. I had no prior acquaintance with the reader. I hope to one day we meet. Tim Sykes, who is a buddy of mine, persuaded me that I have to start a blog back when we were in college. He prepared it for me to use. Even the “About Me” section was written by him. I didn’t want a blog. I had nothing to say. On the other hand, some six or seven months ago I made the decision that I wanted to start taking my blog more seriously. I continued to put off updating the “About Me” section, despite the fact that it was no longer actually about me and possibly never was.

And there was something I want. For the very first time in my life, I wanted to experience the transitory pleasures of accomplishment so that I could feel better about myself. I wished there was a woman sitting next to me. I desired to create and then sell businesses so that I could finally demonstrate to everyone that I was the most intelligent person. My goal was to host a television show. My goal was to become a published author. I’m an entrepreneur and angel investor. I am now considered a master at the game of chess.

And I am the author of the book “Choose Yourself,” which has been ranked as the best-selling book by the Wall Street Journal. I’ve launched 20 businesses, and 17 of them have been unsuccessful. But I’ve picked up a lot of useful information along the road. I want to help you if you’ve ever been trapped in anything—whether it be a job that you despise, a home that you can’t afford, a life that you don’t want, your own troubled thoughts, or anything else.
