Jason Whitlock Bio, Life, and Career:

Jason Whitlock is largely regarded as the most controversial, in-depth, and entertaining sports journalist of our day. Whitlock was named “one of 40 persons who will alter the world” by Vibe Magazine in their September 2007 issue.

Whitlock is currently a host on Fox Sports 1’s “Speak for Yourself” and a frequent guest on Fox News and Fox Business. He has also been seen on Tucker Carlson Tonight and Varney & Co. Whitlock has created a name for himself both locally and nationally by tackling some of the most touchy issues in sports journalism with courage and the column writing style he learned from his mentor Ralph Wiley.

Whitlock’s ability to transform sports analysis into social commentary and offer a new perspective on a sensitive matter is best seen in his column about Don Imus and Rutgers basketball, published on April 11, 2007. “Imus isn’t the true evil guy” is one of the most widely circulated columns in the history of newspapers. It’s been likened to Leonard Pitts’ 9/11 piece, which won the Pulitzer Prize.

Two episodes of “The Oprah Winfrey Show” were based on the column, which suggested that black people should look at the culture of black-on-black disrespect in hip-hop music rather than criticizing an outdated radio shock jock.

Whitlock’s original post and subsequent columns sparked a national discussion and brought fresh attention to a topic that had been neglected. Following this, Sharpton and Simmons issued separate calls for rappers to stop using the N-word, bitch, and ho. Mock funeral services for the N-word were held by the NAACP. Major African-American publications like Ebony Magazine have recently run in-depth features on the “war against rap music” and “a culture of disrespect.”

Sports fans all over the country were already familiar with Whitlock thanks to his tenure as a sports journalist for the Kansas City Star. It’s common practice for Whitlock’s essays to spark heated debate and discussion among his Kansas City audience. To Whitlock’s chilling interview with Larry Johnson before LJ’s 2007 training camp holdout to his 1994 column making light of the Kansas-Kansas State football rivalry to his threatened boycott of Royals baseball games following the 1994 work stoppage to his belittling of Texas basketball fans during the early years of the Big 12 Tournament to his yearly grades of the Kansas City Chiefs to his reporting on former Kansas basketball star J.R. Giddens’ involvement in an ugly bar fight to his yearly grades

Whitlock pens a column called “Real Talk” for FOXSports.com once a week. Previously, he had penned the “Real Talk” column for AOL Sports. He sent shockwaves through the sports community with his essays describing the lawless and rude atmosphere at NBA All-Star Weekend in Las Vegas. When the Duke Lacrosse case first came to light, Whitlock was one of the first writers to dispute district attorney Mike Nifong’s methods.

Whitlock worked for both ESPN.com and ESPN television for a total of six years. On television, he appeared on Pardon the Interruption, Jim Rome is Burning, The Sports Reporters, and Outside the Lines, and he also authored a weekly blog for ESPN.com.

Whitlock has also been a successful radio talk show presenter, having hosted his shows “Jason Whitlock’s Neighborhood” and “The Doghouse” on Kansas City’s WHB and KCSP. Whitlock has also filled in as host for “The Jungle,” Jim Rome’s nationally syndicated radio program.

Whitlock, a native of Indianapolis and a 1990 graduate and starting football player at Ball State University, claims to be the first and only paying member of the Jeff George Fan Club. George and Whitlock won the 1984 Indiana Big School state championship as a team.

Whitlock has previously held positions at the Bloomington Herald-Times, The Charlotte Observer, and the Ann Arbor News before joining the Kansas City Star. The Sporting News and Vibe Magazine are just two of the publications to which he has contributed. Many literary prizes have been awarded to him. As a journalist, Jason Whitlock has contributed to ESPN, AOL Sports, Foxsports.com, The Kansas City Star, and other publications.

He received a football scholarship to college and eventually earned a journalism degree. Over the course of his career, he has worked for multiple firms, discussing football with cohosts and appearing in films. He stands at a lofty 6’3″, making him noticeably larger than average, although he weighs just 174 pounds. Working in the field of media for decades, Jason has proven his worth and established himself as a formidable rival for the limited number of open positions.
