Jodie Marie Comer was born on March 11th, 1993 in the city of Liverpool. She is the daughter of Donna Comer, who worked for Merseyrail, and James Comer, who was a physiotherapist for Everton FC. She spent her childhood in the suburb of Childwall in Liverpool. She is the older sister of Charlie, who is her younger brother and was born in 1995. She went to St. Julie’s Catholic High School in the district of Woolton, which is located in the city of Liverpool.
It was there that she made good friends with Katarina Johnson-Thompson, who would later compete in the Olympics. She began her acting career when she was 11 years old at a local weekend drama school in the Belle Vale neighborhood of Liverpool called CALS. It was through this school that she entered the Liverpool Performing Arts Festival in 2006 at St. George’s Hall and won first place in her category after delivering a monologue about the Hillsborough Disaster.
Comer’s classmates in high school booted her out of their dance group because a holiday with her family conflicted with practices for the school’s talent show, and she chose to do a monologue instead of dancing for the presentation. Even though she did not come out on top, her performance was impressive enough to convince the theatre teacher at her school to ask some of her contacts in the entertainment industry for a favor that would enable her to try out for a role in a BBC Radio 4 production.
She would go on to land her first acting role in this play, during which her fellow cast members encouraged her to find an agent and assured her that she had the potential to have a successful career in the acting industry.A one-off appearance by Comer in an episode of The Royal Today, a spin-off series of the medical drama series The Royal, marked the beginning of the actor’s career in 2008.
After then, she had roles in television shows like Waterloo Road, Holby City, Doctors, Silent Witness, Casualty, Law & Order: UK, Vera, and Inspector George Gently, among others. She was offered starring roles in a number of upcoming productions, including the supernatural anthology series Remember Me, the five-episode drama series Justice, and the comedy-drama series My Mad Fat Diary on E4.
Comer had an appearance in the Lady Chatterley’s Lover film version that was released as a television movie in 2015 and aired on BBC One. Comer made her debut in the role of Kate Parks in the drama series Doctor Foster, which aired on BBC One in the same year.
Ivy Moxam was Comer’s first leading role, which she played in the BBC Three miniseries Thirteen, which debuted in February 2016 and earned her a nomination for the British Academy Television Award for Best Actress. The role also marked Comer’s debut in the entertainment industry. In the December 2016 episode of the BBC miniseries Rillington Place, she played the role of Beryl Evans, one of the victims of the serial killer John Christie. Comer was recognized as one of Screen International’s “Stars of Tomorrow” in 2016.
This honor was bestowed on her in conjunction with the BFI London Film Festival. In 2017, she portrayed a younger version of Elizabeth of York in The White Princess, which is a sequel to the BBC miniseries The White Queen and was broadcast on Starz. In 2017, she also made her début in the role of Christine in the biopic England Is Mine, which was based on the life of Morrissey.
