Kenny Bernstein Bio, Life, and Career:

Kenneth Dale Bernstein is a well-known American drag racer and a former team owner in NASCAR and IndyCar. He was born on September 6, 1944, in the United States. He is known as the “Bud King” because of his dominance in the Budweiser King funny car and dragster competitions. Because he was the first driver to break 300 miles per hour in a standing-start quarter mile, he is also known as the “King of Speed.”

This nickname was given to him because of his accomplishment. Bernstein was the driver for King Racing in the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA), which Bernstein controlled. Bernstein also fielded several vehicles in other racing series, including IndyCar and NASCAR. In 2002, Bernstein announced his retirement from full-time competition and transferred his son Brandon into the Bud King Top Fuel dragster.

However, Bernstein came back to finish the season in place of his son after Brandon sustained a serious injury. Bernstein, with the exception of a brief return to Funny Car in 2007, did not return to the car and instead continued to run his team until the end of the 2011 season, at which point he completely retired from drag racing. During this time, he did compete in Funny Car for a brief period in 2007.

Bernstein was a football player for the Monterey High School football team in Lubbock, Texas, where he received his high school education. Bernstein made the decision to leave his studies in business administration at Arlington State College, which is now known as the University of Texas at Arlington, in 1966 so that he may pursue a career as a drag racer.

Because he did not have sufficient funds, he decided to become a traveling salesman for the apparel label Whistle Stop, which is aimed at teenage girls. While touring the states of Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Tennessee in a Cadillac, he stopped in all of those states.

Bernstein was the driver of the Chelsea King funny car during the NHRA Summer Nationals that were held in Englishtown in 1978. In 1979, he started his career as a Funny Car driver on a full-time basis for the first time. The following year, he obtained a sponsorship arrangement from Anheuser-Busch (with its Budweiser brand), which lasted for thirty years until the new owner of Anheuser-Busch, InBev, choose not to extend his contract.

He had the deal with Anheuser-Busch until InBev decided not to renew it. Bernstein won the Funny Car championship for the first time in 1985 and went on to successfully defend his title for the next three seasons.

Bernstein and tuner Dale Armstrong worked together in 1987 to design Bernstein’s Bud King Buick LeSabre. They enlisted the assistance of land speed racers the Arivett brothers. The name “Batmobile” would be given to this automobile. It would have a significant impact on the aerodynamics of the Funny Car.

In 1990, with a modification to the guidelines established by the NHRA, Bernstein began competing in the Top Fuel Dragster category of the sport. Bernstein won his first Top Fuel championship in 1996, becoming the first driver in NHRA history to win a championship in both of the nitro classes. However, Bernstein states that his 1996 championship was “somewhat tainted” due to the loss of driver Blaine Johnson. Two years later, Bernstein became the first driver in any class to exceed 300 MPH in competition.

Two years after that, Bernstein became the first driver in any class to exceed 300 MPH in competition. At the awards luncheon that year, Bernstein awarded his championship trophy to Alan Bernstein, Blaine’s brother and longtime crew chief. Since then, Alan Bernstein has gone on to win twelve additional championship trophies for himself, serving as crew chief for Gary Scelzi, Tony Schumacher, Larry Dixon, Shawn Langdon, and Brittany Force.

Bernstein is the only driver to have won numerous championships in both nitro categories and recaptured the title in 2001. He is also the only driver to have won both of the nitro categories.

Bernstein took his retirement in 2002, at which time he passed the mantle of “Budweiser King” driving to his son Brandon. In spite of this, he was required to return to duty in the capacity of a substitute driver after Brandon Bernstein suffered a back injury in June. Bernstein resumed up right where he had left off, winning four consecutive Top Fuel events to close out the season to place him sixth in season points.

Despite the fact that he only competed in 15 events, Bernstein started up right where he had left off. After the conclusion of the season, he went back to managing his team, but reports began to circulate that he was planning to make a comeback.

Bernstein made the announcement that he would compete again in the Funny Car division for the following season, with his own team fielding the Monster Energy Dodge Charger. The announcement took place in September 2006. His comeback to active racing did not get off to a good start, as he was unable to qualify for either of the first two races of the 2007 season. This prevented him from collecting the required minimum of ten points that are awarded to drivers who complete at least one qualifying run.

In the wake of those occurrences, Bernstein parted ways with his crew chief Ray Alley and hired Jimmy Walsh, who had previously served in the same capacity for Top Fuel driver J.R. Todd. Bernstein was the owner of the NASCAR team known as King Racing, which competed from 1986 through 1995.

While doing so, he oversaw the operations of the King Motorsports IndyCar team. Bernstein is the only owner of a team to have won titles in all three categories, and he does so alone. At the 1988 Indianapolis 500, with Jim Crawford in the driver’s seat, his crew delivered an outstanding performance. Even though Crawford was still nursing leg problems from the previous year, he managed to lead eight laps and finish in sixth place.
