The date of Larry H. Miller’s birth is April 26, 1944, and he was born in Salt Lake City, Utah. Larry Miller, under the guise of Mister Laurence, a character he created for his children’s music, sought to provide children with a deeper and more complex musical experience without sacrificing the lighthearted fun for which children’s music is known. Miller’s path to his final musical destination was winding and uncertain. Miller grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he studied piano and clarinet with teachers and learned to play guitar, bass, drums, accordion, and kazoo by ear.

When he was a teen, he and his brothers Ben and Roger formed the powerful psychedelic rock band Sproton Layer. During the late ’70s, Roger traveled to Boston to lead the groundbreaking alternative music band Mission of Burma, while Larry and Ben both played in the experimental semi-punk rock band Destroy All Monsters. After Destroy All Monsters disbanded, Larry played with a number of other bands in Michigan on an as-needed basis. He rejoined Ben and Roger in the ’90s for the experimental rock of M-3, and he also contributed to the classic rock of Detroit’s Empty Set.
