Levardis Robert Martyn Burton Jr. His mother, Erma Gene (née Christian), worked as a social worker, administrator, and educator. Meanwhile, his namesake and father, who worked as a photographer for the United States Army Signal Corps and was stationed at Landstuhl at the time of his son’s birth, was a social worker.
Burton and his two sisters were reared by their mother in the city of Sacramento, which is located in the state of California. Burton, who had a Catholic upbringing, made the decision to enrol in the St. Pius X Minor Seminary in Galt, California when he was a teenager with the goal of eventually becoming a priest. At the age of 17, he began to have doubts about the Catholic faith and shifted his career path to acting. In the television movie Roots: The Gift from 1988, he appeared in the character of Kunta Kinte once more. When questioned about the impact that Roots has had on society, Burton is cited as saying: “It widened people’s awareness of the world around them. Both blacks and whites started viewing one another as real people rather than as their respective racial archetypes. In addition to this, if you drop a pebble into the lake, you will cause ripples to appear. I believe that the only thing that is constant is change and that change is always gradual. Anything that takes place in a single day has no foundation to support it. The evolving trend that Roots is a part of is still in the process of being played out.” Reading Rainbow first aired on PBS in 1983 with Burton serving as both the show’s host and executive producer. The show aired for a total of 23 seasons.
